My taxes have gone up $3k in 3 years...

We are now bordering $8k / year Chat Icon

We live in a 1 sq mile town in NJ...we have our pros and cons but we are not 100% committed to staying there. Everytime they raise the taxes, our payments go up another $100/month! Chat Icon

I think I am going to start doing some research on towns that are larger and have corporate subsidization etc..the problem with my town is that there are only local businesses, no AT & Ts or Johnson & Johnson, etc...

This just makes me so angry! $1000 a YEAR??!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Did you guys get re-evaluated? We are facing that this year and although we are in a condo - we are nervous as to what we should expect in the homes we are looking at!

I definitely think a more industrial or coporate based town is the way to go! Even tho we are as small as you, we have tons of commercial, luckily.

Stay out of Essex County then! We have the highest taxes in the state. Can you go a little further south, or is that not an option? I know some towns in S. Jersey taxes are very reasonable.

Like the PP asked, did you go through a re-eval? We are in the midst of one and will find out in Nov or Dec, but our taxes are already almost double what yours are.

I don't know about NJ, but on LI we can grieve our taxes. It's a legal process in which you hire an attorney and file papers to have your taxes lowered.

Oh I know Chat Icon Chat Icon We would like to stay in the Central Jersey area...we like it here and both of our jobs are here. I am sure we will be able to find something if we looked but I dont know if I really want to...supposedly my town is re-doing the dowtown area, building condos next to the train station etc but I have yet to see that Chat Icon All I have been seeing is yet another 99 cent store etc. Can I call someone at the mayor's office or something and ask what is going on?? I would call the village hall, or even make a visit there. There should be someone there you can talk to about why the taxes keep going up.

I live in Union County and it's not better here either - I hate to admit what we pay as well. It's nuts. I used to live in a townhouse in Union, which is only an okay area - not the greatest. We sold 2 years ago and were paying close to $8k - for a townhouse!!
