I know its done in Hollywood tan and a few salons.
I think lolita (Jess) did it and Porkchop.

I like it a lot. I'm very very fair and it's a good pick me up for a mid-season wedding or even during the summer when you just haven't had the time to get to the beach.
That said - be careful! You MUST apply the barrier cream to your toes and your hands. I also apply it to outside of my armpits  and my elbows because dry skin retains the color much more and then you look like a leopard 
For my own wedding as well as when I was MOH in my best friend's wedding, I went a little more high end to Glow Spa in the city. Ah-ma-zing! Also ~$60+ a pop so it's got to be for something more than "I'm pale".
ETA: I also wash my hands as soon as I walk out of the room.

agreed.
i also suggest not wearing the "booties" and just putting the barrier cream on your toe nails and between your toes and especially all over your hands
