nap time in school

For those of you who have 4-5 year olds, can you tell me what your schools policy is on nap time? do they have one? do they have to sleep? can they "read" a book or do a quiet activity?

Re: nap time in school

DD is only going to be 2, but the nursery school she will going to in Sept. has 4 yr olds who nap. I remember when the director took me on a tour, they were laying in the gym on mats, and they had their own blankets and pillows from home. The teachers played classical music and the kids all had to lay down for 45 min. The 2's and 3's don't nap because they are only there 2.5 hours, 4's are there 9:30-2:30.

Re: nap time in school

Nap time is 12:30-2:30 -
Since the school is open 12hrs/ day its mandated to have a period of rest (although most children aren't there the full 12 hrs- some are)

Lights go off- nap time lights go on...

Every child lays on a nap mat- the first half hour is rest, after that the children are allowed a quiet activity on their mat (usually a book or puzzle) Of course if the children do not follow the rules and respect their friends who are sleeping they lose this "privilege"

Re: nap time in school

I can actually remember back to when I was in pre school and kindergarten..we were allowed books and puzzles during nap time. We had to stay on our mat.

This was exactly the policy at both of my kid's schools.

Re: nap time in school

I'm a Pre-K teacher & in our school there is no nap/rest time...yet our day is from 9-1pm.

When I taught nursery at a different school, it was 8-230 & we had nap after lunchtime. The policy was, we'd start w/ a storytime, they'd be on their mats & we encouraged them to sleep, but if they didn't we'd let them hold a stuffed animal or read a book, but they had to stay on their mat. Nap time was an hour. If a child got up, etc., then everyone wanted to get up, etc., so staying on the mats was impt.

In K, at least in our school, the day is so scheduled w/ activities there is barely time for any free play, let alone nap time (kinda sad). Chat Icon

thank you, that sounds fair to me. But my 5 year old has to lay on his mat and not move off it, not talk, and do nothing for 50 minutes. Then they are surprised that they are having trouble with the kidsChat Icon

Wow, call me naieve, but I had no idea that school's had naptime. My son goes from 9-12, and of course, no naptime. However, even if he does an extended day (9-2), they have lunch, but no nap. My son would probably do well though, he can fall asleep anywhere, anyhow. Chat Icon However, my DD? She can't sit still for 5 minutes, I could never imagine her following rules to be still and nap Chat Icon

DS goes 9:30-2:30, so they have a 50 minute naptime. In September I thought there would be no way Ryan would nap, but they have always said he does, or if he doesnt sleep he rests quietly. Now all of the sudden he is "disruptive" at nap time, of course 2 weeks ago at parent-teacher conference he wasnt.

He is 5, the oldest in his class, and gave up naps a long time ago. I guess sometimes he falls asleep, but I am upset they dont let him do a quiet activity if he cant sleep. To make a 5 year old IMO lie still and quiet for 50 minutes is just meanChat Icon

Re: nap time in school

My pre-schooler has a nap time (he is 4 and some kids in his class are newly 5). They darken the room and the children lay on their mats... they must stay on the mat but if they don't sleep it is okay. They rub the child's back if needed.

My older son is in first grade - but he had nap time in kindergarten last year and it was a similar policy.
