Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed
Natalie Portman and fiancé Benjamin Millepied get an A-plus for the name they picked for their baby boy.
Their son's name is Aleph, a source confirms to PEOPLE.
So what's in a name? Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, much like alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Aleph is the number 1 in Hebrew and can also be spelled "alef."
Its esoteric meaning in Judaic Kabbalah, as denoted in the theological treaty Sefer-ha-Bahir, relates to the origin of the universe, the "primordial one that contains all numbers."

not alone, I was teetering between ALF and ALE EFF ???
ALEF is different enough. I like how its near ALEX in pronunciation, but still a name of its own.

Re: Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed
I think its an interesting name. My parents/DH are Israeli and I know the word very well. Its pronounced A LEF
Its an odd name, I have never heard it used as a name. Its like naming your child "A." In Israel it would be very weird. But I think the homage to her Israeli background is pretty cool.

Re: Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed
It's pronounced Ah-Lef. (/'??l?f/, /'??l?f/)
I really like that name! It's different enough and yet it doesn't sound idiotic or like someone is trying too hard to be different. Also has a great meaning behind it.

Re: Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed
It feels like she named her baby the letter A. I get the nod to her Jewish heritage but at the same time its like naming your kid the letter A. I really hope that if/when she has more children she does not give them the name Beit (B in Hebrew), Gimmel or Dalit (The next few letters of the Hebrew alphabet). However Dalit (pronounced dah leet) sounds pretty I could actually see naming a girl that....

I don't think it is bad at all. Not something I would name my child... but it is ok.

Re: Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed
Just once I want to see a celeb name their baby "John" or "Sue". At this point, THAT would be more shocking

Yes, I was just thinking that! Especially if she has someone deceased in her family with a name starting with D (it's Jewish tradition to name your baby after a deceased family member, but some people just use the same first letter as the deceased person)

Re: Natalie Portman's Baby Name Revealed
Didn't she do an interview where she specifically said her baby name would not be "weird" like every other celebrity I'm not saying I like or don't like it but I was expecting something a bit more common maybe or at least heard of.

Exactly--My first thought was--she named him A? Like A Martinez? (a soap actor) Followed by, "if she has another, would they name him/her B in Hebrew?
It's an odd choice, but not a horrible name.

Agreed. I'm assuming she'll name her second "Bet" or "Beys" (two different pronouciations of the 2nd letter of the Hebrew alphabet).
