I just had this same issue for a wedding I am going to on Sunday.
Most of the golds & silvers were too light & flashy. A bronze or pewter would look better I think, but I couldn't find any that fit , that liked so I actually ended up with strappy blue shoes that match pretty much exactly. It's weird, but they looked the best. ( I bought & returned 4 other pairs)
I think it also depends on the dress. My mom is wearing a navy dress suit to a day wedding, and she, the sales person , and I all agreed that dark brown, dark gray or even black patent leather would look best.
