NCLB
Now that NCLB has been in effect for a few years what is your opinion on it.

my opinion.... the idea comes from the right place ( wanting to make sure we are educating all children)
However- it is not practical and when non-educators make educational decisions, it can never work!
Politicians need to keep their noses out of schools and let people who actually work with kids make these decisions!

Not for nothing, but for the government to mandate standards and do nothing to support them financially seems a bit insane to me. Put up or shut up, if you ask me.
My major beef, at this time, is a child who is mainstreamed into my class for all non-academic parts of the day. He is an ESL student with an IQ of 59. Sweetest kid ever, and I adore him. His instructional level at this time is on a kindergarten level. (I am 5th grade)
At the end of this year, he will take a (modified) standardized tests meant to track growth in major subject areas on the 5th grade level. Ummm.....he can't read yet! No matter what happens this year, we can't track growth. His tests from last year, they just had to write that he was unable to perform on the test...can't answer at all. The same will happen this year when you start throwing tests in front of him. So how can he show any growth? Why not test him on his instructional level and actually track growth?????
But he will count into our school numbers...in multiple subgroups- free & reduced lunch, esl, etc...it drives me nuts. As a teacher, I don't want to look at a child like this and even have to think about what he will do to my test scores (I mean, he is an angel and I love him)....but I can't help it, because every year I feel so much pressure to perform...

OH! and can someone explain to me how it helps a failing school to take away their funds?!?!
Funds for those schools should be increased so they can do more to get kids to succeed!

I know I need to get off my high horse about this, but no mandate or amount of money will do anything unless more is done about student and parent accountability.

I have a question, you mentioned parent/student accountability, I don't know if this is true or not but I someone told me that parents get money if they attend meetings, send their kids to school and I don't know what else.

I don't know if this is true, Thats why I was asking
There was a pilot project, privately funded, in NYC recently. It paid parents for attending conferences and taking kids to the doctor, and paid the kids as well, though I don't recall all the specifics. I am not sure how successful it was. It was controversial (as it should be, IMO) because it paid parents and kids for things they should do anyway.
