Nearly 6,000 students in quarantine or isolation in Florida school district
Nearly 6,000 students and over 300 staff members tested positive or have been exposed to COVID-19 in a Florida school district, officials announced Monday.
Why it matters: The alarming number of people in quarantine or isolation has prompted an emergency board meeting at Hillsborough County Public Schools — the seventh-largest district in the nation.

What's the difference between quarantine and isolation?

I think isolation is for those who are positive and quarantine is just for those who have been exposed. This is happening in a lot of southern states without mask mandates.
ETA - I just saw the article and it does mean what I thought.

There goes Florida. Shocking that it hasn’t just fallen into the ocean yet. Let’s see how the nyc doe does with masks and 3 feet of distancing where possible. Btw in most doe schools distancing with everyone back is impossible.

I will be interested to see how it goes here compared to Florida. I don’t see us having the same issue but who knows?

Easy solution: Stop quarantining healthy people.
I don’t know how many will be healthy for much longer. Last I just read, 2500 were on ventilators.
Palm Beach County Commission declared a state of emergency and started drafting an executive order that is expected to require local hospitals to report daily data — and may impose new restrictions on residents.

2500 students are on ventilators? Last year in our school district, less than five “close contacts” contracted Covid. Healthy kids missed school and sports for no reason.

They didn’t specify, but I’ll see what I can find. I’m glad the majority of the people in your school district remained healthy last year.

I have to agree. I am over the quarantine part. My DS was quarantined 4 times maybe more last year. My DD at least twice.
I don’t see the point in quarantining kids anymore. It’s the only time they are doing contact tracing it’s stupid. (Unless an employer reports it) not one person gor covid from a close contact.
Or at least have a test out option after a few days. Quarantining is getting out of control.

2500 people in Florida are on ventilators - not students.

Our neighboring school district has said if a positive student was wearing a mask, anyone within three feet and no mask has to quarantine but if bother had masks no quarantine. Vaccinated adults don’t quarantine regardless of mask or no mask. The quarantine makes no sense! Let the maskless vaccinated adult spread it around the school?!?! I’m so over quarantines. We need to stop quarantining healthy people.

When everyone was wearing masks in school last year, I agree that the quarantines didn’t seem to do much for asymptomatic kids except disrupt everyone’s lives. There was almost no in school transmission in our large town. However, with the Delta variant which is significantly more contagious and classrooms being back to full capacity, I think quarantines make more sense to prevent the spread in school. I’m not looking forward to having to deal with quarantines again especially now that I’m back in the office. I just hope the kids can stay in school as long as possible and be safe.

My school was back full time by November.
Quarantine still makes no sense. Of my mod was exposed at a friends house playing with them no mask they wouldn’t have to quarantine cause no one would know because they don’t ask who you were near. So they are basically contact tracing in school for what reason if everywhere else doesn’t matter???!!
I’m on with making a class remote for 10 days need be but I’m not ok that the mods have to quarantine and stay in for 10 days it’s ridiculous!

I mean in that situation - it's on you to quarantine. I know people who were contacted in those situations (their names were given) but it was very late in the game...
We had dinner at a friend's house and the husband tested positive 2 days later. We weren't contact traced but we did quarantine (except DH who is essential). It was easy though, our schools were remote anyway since our numbers were through the roof with false positive tests of asymptomatic people during the yellow zone testing.

It matters bc if people just self quarantined when they have a known exposure instead of going to school or wherever and then getting sick, we wouldn't have so many cases or quarantines.

I agree. I know it’s too much to expect people to do the right thing and keep others from potentially being exposed.
My older ones were quarantined due to exposures in sports. They were either all masked or not close enough to the positive individual for me to really be concerned, but the whole team was supposed to quarantine after being notified. Since they played for an OOT team, our district wasn’t notified about the exposure. I notified the school nurse and followed the proper protocols. I’m sure there are people who wouldn’t think twice about sending kids to school after a known exposure, but that’s not something I’d feel comfortable doing especially now with more crowded classrooms and a more contagious variant. Again, I’m not happy about quarantines, but I do recognize why they make sense right now in schools where kids spend a significant amount of time in fairly close proximity to others.
