Need advice

I need some advice. I have a BS and I am interested in teaching. I am looking into Touro college to get my masters. Has anyone gone there? Can anyone recommend any good schools/programs in NY? Also, I need help deciding what is better to teach Biology for older students or do early childhood development? Your help is much appreciated! TIA!

Re: Need advice

I currently am going to Queens College for my masters in secondary sped. I am a nyc teaching fellow. One of my prof. is a principal and she said she would not hire a teacher if they went to toro for teaching. I am not sure why,, but she always told us to tell people that, so I am just passing the message.

You should try Queens College... I have had a good experience so far and I know they have an excellerated Biology Ed program. I think you go to school for 1 year and during your second year you are a full time teacher.
Good Luck.

You are def better off going for bio. This year my district excessed 39 teachers but had to hire one bio teacher because it was the only dept they couldn't cut from. Anyway, not sure where you're located but what about Dowling, St. Joes, or Stonybrook?? Good luck!

i thought about the QC program. You get an certificate though - not MA. You can do this if you have 36 credits in bio (or any subject)

elementary is so hard to get into right now.

Thanks so much for all of your advice! I still am confused but maybe I should definitely look into biology, as I keep hearing there is a shortage of bio teachers...I am also looking into Hunter College and Molloy college. Anyone hear or know anything about those schools??

I would also have to agree with heading toward bio.

Just FYI I am a bio teacher and most of my interviews were looking for duel cert. I ended up getting a chem cert also. It took a long time to find a job for just bio.

ITA... if you go for bio, definitely get a second certification (Earth Sci, Chem, or Physics)... otherwise it may be much harder to find a job.

Re: Need advice

there is a shortage of teachers for the sciences so i would definitely go that route over early childhood ed.

also, i have also heard that touro is not well-regarded in terms of education.

Re: Need advice

IMO, it's better not to pay private school tuition for your ed degree. Your salary will be the same no matter where you got the degree or what you paid for it. I got my Masters at Queens for under $10,000 and Touro must be at least 3 times that, right? For the same jobs at the same salary when you're done. Actually, as the above poster mentioned, Touro is pretty well-known for being a degree factory, where you just pay big bucks to get your degree as quickly and easily as possible. A bunch of people I knew (who could afford it!) did this after they had their jobs and provisional certification. It might hurt you a bit if you choose Touro before you have a job.

Check out the CUNY schools (like Hunter or Queens) and SUNY Stony Brook, and graduate without tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt.

If the most important thing to you is hire-abilty (as in, you don't have to teach little ones to fulfill your teaching dreams) then definitely go for the science certification. When there is an elementary ed position available on Long Island, the district receives literally hundreds of applications. I've heard of districts receiving over 1000 applications for one job. It's insane.

GOOD LUCK! It's a tough road but totally worth it.
