Need advice...feedings and schedule
I feel like I ask a million questions...so let me apologize beforehand... so my DD is 5 weeks and I am trying to figure out how to push her bedtime earlier. This is the schedule...please tell me any modifications you can think of...and tell me if Im doing something wrong!
10-10:30pm- 5oz formula and bedtime 4:30am- 5oz formula and goes back down 9-9:30- wakes 10:00- 2.5oz breastmilk/2oz formula 1pm- 2.5/2oz 4pm- 2.5/2oz 7pm- 2.5/2oz
I would like to make her bedtime earlier then 10:30- but shes sleeping so beautifully with what we have now Im afraid to mess it up. But as the Healthy Baby book states...if she goes down earlier she may sleep later... I could make her last feeding the 7pm feeding...but then I would be eliminating one feeding...so i was thinking of increasing the daytime feeding oz's to replace what would would be missing. Any thoughts? Sorry Im rambling...

Re: Need advice...feedings and schedule
You can try increasing her feedings but I don't think that's a guarantee she will go down earlier.
You have a pretty good schedule IMO for a 5 week old. At that age DD was all over the place

At that age DD also went to bed late. Honestly, it seems like you guys have a good system down, I wouldn't mess with it.
I think at about 3 months, DD started with a more "normal" bedtime. Do you have a bedtime routine? You can start doing it 10-15 minutes earlier every night and see if she adjusts.

Re: Need advice...feedings and schedule
i think that schedule is fantastic for 5 weeks!
i would wait a couple of weeks before trying to get her to sleep longer - IMO (and based on my own experience) she might still need that extra feeding, and she might not even taking more oz. at each feeding.

Im not sure if its a "routine" but we go into the bedroom with dim lights and I put on her white noise machine..and swaddle her. She dosent get swaddled during the day (hence the irregular naps)...she gets a bottle and passes out in my arms...I put her in the bassinett. Now Im freaking because I read more of the book last night...and its saying I should be putting her down in a silent room when shes awake but sleepy. I feel like Im potentially messing up her sleeping habits. I did try the 15 minuets earlier...but then Im waking her at 930 to feed. The only nap she really passes out for is the one after the 7pm feeding...and I always wake her for the last one before bed. Thats why Im thinking it may be her bedtime feeding...

I think if I gave that child 10oz at a feeding she would gobble it up. She always wants more

Re: Need advice...feedings and schedule
It definitely sounds like after the 7pm bottle, should be her bedtime. IMO, I would not wake her - let her sleep and you might be suprised. At that age she will probably still need a bottle (or 2) during the night. I would also add another ounce or two to the 7pm bottle, if she will take it. We found that was the key to getting DD to sleep long stretches.

Re: Need advice...feedings and schedule
DD went to bed around 11-11:30 at that age so I think that is great! At about 2 months or so, I started moving her bedtime earlier by 15min every couple of nights. She continued to wake up at the same time 5amish but eventually even pushed that to 6 and now 7. It was a pretty seamless transition doing it gradually. I didn't eliminate any feeding until the bedtime feeding got too close to the feeding before. I was only nursing though so it was also part of our bedtime routine.

At 5 weeks old I don't know if you can ask for better than that. With my DD it was a long time before she had an early bedtime.

well that is good! you could definitely try 6 oz. at each feeding, see if she'll take it and go longer between feedings.
but truthfully i think you are doing a great job, she is sleeping well and that is awesome!!

i agree with this - i didn't realize you were waking her for the 10pm feeding. she is old enough now that if she is hungry, she will wake up

Re: Need advice...feedings and schedule
You're doing a great job! I wouldn't wale for that 10pm feeding. She may wake on her own anyway. But eventually she will just drop one of the feedings especially if you can get her to eat more during the day. At this rate she'll be sleeping through the night in no time

Re: Need advice...feedings and schedule
Do you think I should increase the breastmilk or formula during the day? Im thinking maybe increasing the daytime feedings by .5oz and then the 10am and 4am feedings to 6oz. Does that sound good? That seems to be the general consensus How do you find out how much a baby is supposed to eat during the day?

You can definitely try increasing the daytime bottles. I don't think DD every took less than 3oz at a feeding. I would definitely increase the 7pm bottle, and don't wake her and see what happens.
Remember - there is no "right or wrong", it is whatever works for your child.
