I think Rachel Ray's cookbooks are pretty easy to follow! I have the 365: No Repeats! Tons of recipes!

The Better Homes and Gardens classic. It has lots of tips on how to roast meat, etc.. and basic recipes like pancakes.

ITA! It is a cookbook to cook all the basics. I am a pretty 'advanced' cook yet I still use this... and so did my mom & grandmother.

One of my standby for just about everything is Mark Bittman's How To Cook Everything.

I have this and it is great but might be overwhelming to a new cook as it's huge and doesn't have glossy pictures. It is great though b/c you can look up ANYTHING and find out how to do it!

I also have the BHG one above (actually it's DH's) and I would definitely recommend that one for a new cook--very accessible!

Barilla.com has some great recipes that you can print out on these cute cards and make a small flip cookbook for her. I would get her Ray's 30 minute meals and a few others as well but this little easy cookbook from Barilla is a nice add-on. It is SO easy and the recipes are delicious. Simple ingredients but tasty.

i like rachel ray's "30 minute meals".... we have both of them, and the recipes are easy and so good! they really get you thinking " hey! i can do this cooking thing!
i also get her magazine, too- its nice to see some new recipes once a month, and it keeps you excited to keep cooking and trying new stuff.
also, the red and white checkered one that other people posted is a great basic one, too.

Re: need an EASY recipe cookbook recommendation

I don't know if you'd think this is too silly or not, but it's a beginner cookbook aimed at college students, so it teaches about basic things, gives inexpensive shopping trips, and also gives directions for using more common appliances since you may not have the works as a new cook! I've had it for years and still rely on it for my potato salad recipe among other things.

Also, ITA with the Better Homes book, I've constantly referenced that for learning different cuts of meat, etc. Chat Icon
