NEED HELP ASAP!!! Problem w/removal of glued on laminate backsplash!

Well, my DH removed the countertops actually without any problems but now he removed the glued on laminate backsplash and most of the wall, well the first layer of the sheetrock came off with it. There was no way to avoid it. What do we do now? It's mostly down to the brown part of the sheetrock. How do we fix it so it's paintable? The wall is not level with the rest of the wall from the missing sheetrock. The glue was on there very good. It's been on there for over 30 years. Please help!!! Can we spackle such a huge area??? AAAAAaahhhh! This all has to be fixed before the countertops are installed early Monday morning. Not me, but everyone else wanted to wait until the last minute! Chat Icon Chat Icon

sorry to hear that! I'm pretty sure you have to re-sheetrock that...... take the remainder off... it's much easier than you think, and will be a perfect surface to paint in a couple days, as long as you prime first...

We had a similar problem when we renovated the kitchen at our last house. If I remember correctly, we were able to spackle (um, heavily). I guess it depends on how bad it is. Good luck! Chat Icon

Thanks!!

Well, there's not really holes in the wall. It's the surface paper of the sheetrock that ripped off so now what's mostly showing is the brown paper part. It would have to be spackled in large areas due to the top layer peeling off in large quantities. It's a good amount of areas measuring in feet worth. My DH says he can replace the sheetrock, it's easy. But, he's never done it before so I'm worried.

In a situation like that, you can definitely skim coat the wall. This is where you use spaklel/spakle type product and lay a very think layer on the walls to make it smooth again. My mom has had it done in her bathroom when she took off wallpaper. It is hard to do, so it would be best to get someone to come in an do it for you.

Fastest, easiest, cleanest, best is to replace it with new drywall...

consider buying self stick faux tin or copper wall tiles & tile it yourself right over what is there. Or buy clearance tile & do a tile backsplash. If the spackle isn't perfect & you paint it, it will look like crap.
