Need Help: Cat just diagnosed with Diabetes
My Mom contacted me yesterday saying that she was taking the family cat to the vet because he was drinking alot of water (bowlfulls at once).
She contacted me just now stating that the vet has diagnosed him with Diabetes. They have to take him to the animal hospital for testing which they said can take 2-4 days depending on how he reacts. The vet also stated that he will need two insulin shots a day.
I need help, information, if anyone can shed some light so I can explain things to my Mom. (I'm the one who usually helps her with what questions to ask etc...)
Also if anyone can shed some light on the costs of this? (I plan on helping financially as well). I am going to help my Mom through this.

My friend had a cat with diabetes. I don't remember how much it cost her. I do remember how she would go home on her lunch break and give it its shots.

My DH is a veterinarian, and we also have a cat with diabetes (he also has leukemia and hyperthryoidism).
At first, I was freaked about the shots, but after two days, it's no big deal. We are both out of the house most of the day, so we give him one shot in the am before leaving, and one at night, before going to bed. The needle is so small that it doesn't bother our cat at all. Your vet will teach you how to give the shot (it's very easy, scary at first, but you or your mom will get used to it).

In the beginning of the diabetes diagnosis, my DH monitored our cat's bloods a lot, in order to be sure he had the correct insulin levels. Now, that he's stabilized, he monitors it on a less frequent basis.
Our cat lives a normal, happy life, so diabetes may be a bump in the road, but your cat can still have a wonderful life.
