Need help deciding which formula to try

If you baby has been spitting up a lot, sometimes cries after 2 ounces of the bottle and doesn’t want anymore and sometimes gags would you try nutramagin or Enfamil AR?

If he is spitting up, I would try the the Enfamil AR...it is thicker. The Nutramigen is much thinner and will probably spit it up. Or you can add the rice in the bottle with the Nutramigen...because it is good for babies with Colic and gas.

The Ped told me if he had reflux she would put him on the enfamil AR because its thicker but being he doesn’t have reflux and she thinks it’s a digestive problem she said the nutramagin because its thin.

Does this seem right?

Wow, I would say for spitting up go with AR, but you should probably listen to your ped. Chat Icon

I am so worried I made the wrong decision. The AR just to me just seems like would be the right one for him but the ped said Nutramagen.

Re: Need help deciding which formula to try

Sounds a lot like DD. She would scream after 1/2 - 1oz of formula and arch her back and turn from the bottle. She spit up some but not a lot and was very gassy. She would cry in her carseat even when we were driving. Ped put her on Zantac for reflux. After a week and a half of Zantac, we switched her formula to Nutramigen. After about 4 days on the Nutramigen, she ate more, stopped crying in the carseat and just seemed happier. She is still on both the Zantac and Nutramigen because I don't know for sure which helped (I think it was the formula) and am afraid she'll go back to her old ways. Hope this helps and DC feels better. BTW DD still isn't much of an eater, but at least she doesn't scream anymore.

I wouldn't try either yet --- I'd go with the Gentleease first -- which has partially digested milk protiens.

The AR has cereal in it I think --- and the nutramigen I just think of being for babies with more serious issues like reflux, so I'd want to try something like gentleease first.

That's just MHO.

Re: Need help deciding which formula to try

I actually agree with your ped to try nutramigen and not the enfamil AR.

here's why: if your dc has a digestive system issue, say milk protein allergy that is causing the gas, gagging, spitting up (which could all be signs of an allergy) OR even if he does have reflux, the nutramigen is easier to digest AND digests faster b/c it is broken down and also it is formulated without some of the milk proteins that could aggravate a milk protein allergy.

quite frankly, why mess around with the other formulas? if it doesnt get better on the nutramigen within a week or 2, then you need to reevaluate. why does your ped think he does not have reflux? hope this helps.

etd to add: There are also "partially hydrolyzed" formulas on the market, but they are not considered truly hypoallergenic and they can still provoke an allergic reaction. I think Gentleease is a partially hyrolyzed formula.

I have a can of the RTF nutramigen that I could not use with Hannah. You can have it if you want. I know it's expensive. Chat Icon

Thanks everyone for your advice Chat Icon

He was already on Gentlease and it was horrible. It was the worst one for him. That is when his gas was at its worse. The gas is so much better now. He really hardly has it He is just spitting up a lot. I was really upset this morning. He Has been on Nutramagen for a day and a half and I think I am just going to stick with this one for a few weeks. He did much better with the last two bottles he had so I am crossing my fingers.
