Need help getting a child to understand Charity.
I was explaining to my 4 year old son that while we clean out his play room that we will take his toys that he has outgrown and give them to the little boys and girls that have no toys.
He flipped. I explained how some boys and girls have no toys because their mommies and daddies don't have enough money to buy them toys. I asked him hw he would feel if he had no toys. He agreed that he would be sad but that he wanted his toys. Then he said well I'm very lucky to have a mommy and daddy who can buy me toys so why don't we just buy toys for the poor boys and girls with no toys. You have the money.
Help! He is really a sweet little boy who always looks out for others. He's not the kid who wants everything he sees. we can go to Toys r Us for a birthday gift and not ask for something for himself. I really want him to understand this. TIA

4 is a little young to understand that IMO. I've found that it's best to do a toy cleanout when the kids aren't home

thats cute... I think its more of an emotional attachment to his toys then him not understanding.. My sil was trying to pack up my nephews toys for his future little sis/bro and he didnt want to give them up for even him/her. Its hard for them to understand having there toys taken away..
Hope it all works out, not sure what advice to give you, im sure to be going through it in a few years with my DD.

Most boys don't learn empathy until around 6. Girls a little later. 4 is a little too young to understand the full meaning of what you are saying. It's great that you are starting him young with helping others, but just realize that he's not being greedy or selfish, just 4.

I agree. Sharing at 4 yo can be a challenge. Giving away toys? MUCH tougher.

What about giving away just one toy right now, and telling him that you will buy a new toy to replace it? Something he isnt too attached to - it wont really teach him the full lesson, but it will show him that giving is a rewarding thing to do....

See, I wouldn't do that. It sort of defeats the purpose of teaching him to give something up for someone in need if he knows mommy and daddy will just go buy him something else ya know?

Does he receive money or toys for chores? If so, perhaps you could start teaching about saving (you match) and charity. You could explain part of the money goes to saving for something he wants, part of the money goes for saving for college (you match) and part of the money goes for charity. You could get him a tzdukah box for charity and a piggy bank for him.
