Need help looking for a Child Psychologist?
We're looking for one for my son and it's just overwhelming on who to choose (through insurance). I was told to go with a Psychologist that specializes in children and has a PhD. I'm seeing a couple with a PhD and a couple with a PsyD??? Is one better than the other when it comes to treatment for a child? Does it matter? Thanks!

I don't know about the degree, but I asked our school's psychologist for recommendations, and then picked one that also took our insurance.
Good luck, it really helped my dd with her issues.

Re: Need help looking for a Child Psychologist?
I can just help you with the PsyD vs PhD. Both PsyD's and PhD's are clinical psychologists and have doctorates in clinical psychology. School psychologists (for the most part) differ in that they do not typically have a doctorate, only a Master's. Both PsyD's and PhD's go to school for a ridiculous amount of time, I know as I am getting a PsyD and it's 5 years of grad school. Both programs require a dissertation. The main difference between PsyD's and PhD's is that PhD programs tend to have more of an emphasis on research and PsyD's emphasize more of the clinical aspect.
Bottom line, definitely pick a clinical psychologist but it doesn't matter if they have a PsyD or PhD, both have equal schooling (approx 5-7 yrs of grad school).
