Need help picking a breed (DOG)

We are looking into adopting at a shelter, but if that doesn't work out, we are going to look into buying a pure breed.
We would like a small to medium dog, (no more than 30lbs). Must be good with children. Also, I would prefer a dog that is known not to bark a lot. I understand all dogs bark, but some breeds are worse then others. I love a dog that is a mush and loves to play.
I figured a lot of you have wonderful dogs, so this was the best place to look.
TIA!

I have 2 pugs, they are great with children. Maybe you can rescue one. You can go on Petfinder.com. Good Luck!

I too would suggest a cocker spaniel. They are very easy to find on petfinder. We adopted one from save-a-pet and we love him to pieces Chat Icon

I grew up with one, she was so good to me! Not much of a barker either, just at the UPS trucks and if she felt the need to protect me. Total sweetie though.

Re: Need help picking a breed (DOG)

My cousin has a keyshound. A friend of mine used to have 2 (they have since passed). They were all wonderful with children of all ages and extremely trainable / well behaved.

I know my cousin researched breeds extensively because she was concerned about temperment.

It's good that you are doing plenty of research before committing!

Re: Need help picking a breed (DOG)

I would also like to recommend Shiba Inus, they sometimes need to be the only dog, but they are great watch dogs and do not bark hardly. They are great with kids.

Also try Border Collies. They are incredibly smart, very trainable and wonderful family members,

Re: Need help picking a breed (DOG)

I have two mutts and a German Shepherd...all which are great with our friends' two year old son, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they are with our little one...I'm more than confident that they will be amazing with the baby.
You can get lucky at a shelter and find a fab small dog...our middle dog, Morgan is a pit/terrier mix...she Is 40lbs...she Is small like a terrier.
You should check out the akc website to see which dogs are good family dogs.
I know cocker spaniels are, labs, goldens and shepards.

do your homework and good luck!

A lot of people on here have mentioned cocker spaniels. I had a female spaniel growing up and although she was a wonderful dog she was not good with young children (other than my brother and I). She was extremely spiteful and would snap/bite if provoked. I might consider a male just from that experience.

I now have a puggle and he is so affectionate and adores children and other adults so I would totally recommend one.

Border Collies are fantastic dogs, very loving and loyal but take a lot of time and patience to train and exercise. They are VERY smart and hyper.

We also have a shetland sheepdog, collie mix. She is much calmer and great with kids.

Re: Need help picking a breed (DOG)

I have a pug. I want to be honest that he was very very active when he was little. He didn't grow out of this until he was like 2 almost 3.

Pugs are also a very stubborn breed, and if their "routine" becomes off, they can become spiteful. That's just been my experience. He has never really been a chewer, fortunately.

He also doesn't really bark unless he hears someone outside the door, a baby crying on tv or something outside.

i agree- DH's family also had a sprinker spaniel as well and had a very similiar experience- once she got older you couldnt go near her without getting snapped at... she was only nice to DH...

Havanese or shih tzu or a mix of them.
do not get bigger then 20 lbs, do not shed and rarely bark. we have a mix and is great w/ kids, no shedding and no barking (rarely). needs to be groomed 5-7 weeks. great dog!

Re: Need help picking a breed (DOG)

DH and a friend of mine from high school also had cocker spaniels (young and old). Cute as heck, but they can be nippy. Dh's barked a lot, but they had more than one dog, so who knows if that contributed.

Why not a havanese? I have had people in my life w/ Shitzu's. I have mixed reviews. A friend from college got hers and she was the biggest mush ever! Barked a lot though. DH had a shitzu that caused his sister to need stitches on her face.

I was going to vote for boxer, but that appears to exceed the weight limit.

You should scroll thru petfinder.com, take a look at the dogs available, their sizes, personalities. etc. Maybe that will help you narrow down what you are looking for.

I really vote for a shelter dog! Because they aren't pure breeds, they don't have definate characteristics that you may not like, and you can see their personalities when you meet them. Mixed breeds are also healthier.

Good Luck with whatever you choose!

In fairness, although, I am hesitant to say this...the one DH's family had was a rescue and we think he was abused in his first home. That is not to deter anyone from rescuing...you just have to make sure that you are going to a good place that tests the animals for aggression and pairs the person and animal properly.

Alli,

Try this web site. I am giving you a link to the breed quiz where you can get a list of breeds that best fits your lifestyle. Click on the breeds and it will give you all the information about temperment, health, how much exercise the dog needs, etc.

I found it very useful when researching breeds.
