need help Please- Re: group gift giving ettiquite
I'm not sure how to handle this. In my office there are 3 of us and 2 bosses. One girl is part time - 3 days a week. The other and I are full. She and I discussed getting a gift for our 2 bosses. She mentioned it to the part timer who VERY begrudgingly said the most she would put in was $10 (she really didn't want to at all).
So the other woman and I decided to get them each a $35 wine gift basket. Well, we felt that if the part-time woman didn't want, she didn't need to contribute, but we agreed that $10 total just wasn't fair to us. I was fine with her not contributing, but the other woman felt we should at least ask her.
So we gave the part timer a note that said what we were doing and if she wanted, she could give us $15 (we'd each now pay $30). So the girl writes me a note back saying she'll give me $10. I feel like I need to tell her that if she wants to contribute she has to at least be willing to contribute 1/2 of what we are. Now I just feel annoyed that she can't cough over the other $5 (I know it's such a small amount, but it's the principle of it now.) Is that unfair of me?
Thanks for any thoughts.

I would let it go for now but not include her in on group gifts again.
eta. if she was giving her own gift, I'd be surprised if she only spent $10 on it.

let it go- she obviously doesn't feel comfortable with spending more
I actually admire her for holding her ground- I would have given you the $5 more
maybe she is on a tight budget

I feel the same. It's a tough time of year for a lot of people - plus she's part-time - you have no idea what her finances are like.

You're all right - I know I have no idea what her finances are like and I guess we will just foget it, but I think part of why it annoys me coming from her is because she is just a difficult person in general. Probably if it was about anyone else it wouldn't.
Thanks all - I appreciate your thoughts!

I'm not sure why you are annoyed at someone who told you in advance that the most she would give you was $10 and stuck to that promise. If you are that bothered by it, I just wouldn't ask her to chip in on gifts in the future.
