Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

A new kitchen is not in our budget for a few years Chat Icon I've tried painting and ick, not loving the faux finish after 2.5 years soooooooooooo, I have an idea so here are some photos.......

Here is a view walking into the kitchen...

Cabinets........

So here is what I'm thinking:
Painting the kitchen a greyish mocha (I have Manchester Tan & Bleeker Beige in the DR/LR and hall). Then painting the wood trim on the cabinets white and putting a white crown molding on top of the cabinets. Then adding brushed nickel hardware to the cabinets......

Yes? No? Don't bother Chat Icon ?

It's really just the cabinets...have you looked into refacing? I'm not sure how white and beige would look together??

Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

We can't reface the cabinets - forget the actual reason. My dad is a contractor and gave me some sort of explanation LOL.

I give up with the kitchen - I'm in it all day long and it actually depresses me. The rest of the house is so nice.....makes me crazy. I need to do something or else I'm going to have to rob a bank Chat Icon

Exactly what you said is what i was going to suggest: paint the wood on the cabinets white, add some hardware, paint the walls. Adding crown moulding to them is also a great idea.

You really could paint the walls any color. What about a sage green or a blue-gray?

Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

I tried the blue greys and they look funny next to the tile - its a wierd color.

I loooooooooooove BM's Adiago (thanks Colleen Chat Icon ) but if you don't have brown in the room its too grey.

Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

here's another idea

If I were you, I would replace the cabinets altogether with shelves (the upper ones) and I'd take the others advice and paint them white and change the hardware.

I HATE upper cabinetry anyway...so for me it would be no thang....

you cannot be in a room that depresses you. it's just not fair Chat Icon

ETA: I like your ideas.

could you hang a pot rack over the counter opposite the cabinets?

ETa: I really love what they did to the counter...and for $85

Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

I like the ideas you have. You could also do a darker tan/beige or even a medium tone brown on the walls to go better with the tiles on the floor. With the cabinets being all white and crown molding, I think the kitchen would be pretty bright. Are you cabinets white or a cream/off white color? It might be hard painting just the trim on the cabinets white and not painting the whole cabinet. They might not match. Can't you paint the whole cabinet white? GL I think you have some great ideas to make your kitchen nicer until you can redo it. And add some nice art work once you decide on colors.

can you paint formica? not sure if the paint will stick but if it is an option, i would paint the cabinets, add the interior rope molding, crown molding on top and new hardware and a few area rugs to add more color and warmth. might get a little $$$ though. with christmas coming soon, maybe your dad will surprise you with a new kitchen. let the hint dropping begin. Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

When DH and I were house hunting we saw a house in Babylon that had your cabinets - they were painted black and the walls were a sage green.

It was beautiful. The kitchen was small and closed in - it wasn't an open floor plan and it didn't seem dark and dingy at all.

my Dad did this in his condo- you would not even know he didn't get new cabinets

it cost him a fraction of the price

then he added granite and new faux SS appliances (since they are on the water)

it looks great

I was looking for pics for you and I saw this. Looks like similar cabinets to yours. Maybe it will give you an idea, but with different colors.

That is really cool - a whole lot of work too LOL. I'm just looking for a clean look, nothing funky and "toddler" friendly Chat Icon .

My cabinets are ivory, kinda like a greyish ivory so the gloss white definitely stands out. I want to get a super nice crown for the top above the cabinets - saw some really nice ones at Lowe's last week. Definitely just going to get knobs instead of handles.

I would love to do what Opehlia posted but I need to lock all my cabinets with the kids around. So for now looks like tan/brown paint and white trim.......

Skew - my dad loves me but not enough to buy me a new kitchen Chat Icon Chat Icon I've tried buttering up Neil but no matter how many spaghetti and meatball dinners I make its not happening.......hard azzzzzz Chat Icon

Oh I didn't mean the funky a lot of work part, I was just thinking about even painting the whole cabinet white and then add the white crown molding and knobs. GL with your painting. Can't wait to see how they come out. Chat Icon

A poster on here painted her laminate cabinets white, and they looked amazing. I forget her name though... You could try to do a search.

I painted my dining room Benjamin Moore Caramel Apple - it's a rich brown color. I think it would look great with your cabinets, white trim and white crown.

Good luck!

I agree. What does the inside of the cabinet door look like? All white? Maybe you can just flip them over and add hardware.

A new floor may also update the look of your kitchen. Not that there is anything wrong with the current floor, but it would give the room a different look expecially if they were installed diagonally.

Oh, I KNOW those cabinets... those were HOT in 83Chat Icon

OK, don't kill me for that comment.Chat Icon

I just happen to know a crazy, nutty old kitchen designer. Oh, if I could hook you up I wouldChat Icon

My suggestion... install a disco ball, some strobe lights, hang up some Duran Duran posters (I have someChat Icon still) and it will be like cooking at the MalibuChat Icon Chat Icon

Oh, I don't know. And your dad is right about refacing... it usually winds up peeling off and most companies do a crappy job.

Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

We have those cabinets also in our kitchen. We rent so there is no way we can change them. They are SO ugly, I hate them.

We even tried to screw into them to install child safetly locks and they were so hard that they broke the drill bit on my FIL's drill. So I don't know how easy it would be to put new hardware into them...

Keep us updated with whatever you do!!!

WOW! looks awesome.

lori - i would definitely try and paint the cabinets and add the crown molding and hardware as you mentioned. an area rug would also be a really nice addition. hmm, what about adding an inexpensive type of backsplash? is pressed tin pricey?

They came out great Kara! Chat Icon Do you have to use Oil Based paint? I know you talked about it getting yellow within a couple of years. My mom might have to do this in her new place. Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Need help redecorating my 80's kitchen....

Look what I just saw on HGTV today. This is a great cheaper alternative to replacing your cabinets.

HGTV 80's Kitchen

Before

After

They just added plain trim to the doors to look like "shaker" style cabinets. Then painted the doors and the cabinets them selves all white. It looks like they just put need wood fronts on the drawers with new handles. So the doors were completely reused and the wood handle that is there is just under the wood trim. Your just have to fill with chalking after you put all the trim on so that the trim looks like it was always there. I hope this helps in some way. GL!
