NEED HELP!!! Those who have OIL homes!

DH and I are closing in a week on a house in PJS. DH was at the house this weekend and noticed that the oil tank is now bare minimum and will need to be refilled before the week is up. The thermostat is set for 62 degree F.

We're going to raise this with the owner before we go to closing, but here's my question:

On the off chance that he doesn't get the tank refilled, I need referrals for immediate refill at the house. What is the going rate for oil fuel? Who has the best deal around? Who has the best customer service? and who would YOU recommend?

I need all the help I can get!

TIA!

I would talk to your lawyer before bringing up the oil thing.. typically in closing costs you have to pay the seller for remaining oil

Re: NEED HELP!!! Those who have OIL homes!

We are planning on going with Slomins. One of my friends just closed in Nov and went with them. Their service contract has been great (replaced a thermostat for them b/c old one was broken). I am not sure about pricing but I know she locked in her oil price for a year. They also do a good deal for alarm and oil. I would check them out. Sorry I can't be more specific with details. But I know they are good.

Re: NEED HELP!!! Those who have OIL homes!

Make sure you mention the low oil tank at closing - they may owe you money for it!
That's what happened at our closing.

I use JC discount fuel 631-732-4800
They are a COD company, I paid $ 1.70 last week, slomins had us locked in at $2.79 when our contracy expired.
I'm not sure about you having to fill it though, the sellers should put a little in & then you guys settle up at closing.

Re: NEED HELP!!! Those who have OIL homes!

Our fear is that the oil left in the tank will be gone by today/tomorrow with the cold temperatures and we're not closing until next Monday sometime. With the cold temps, we don't want any of the pipes to freeze (and burst).

I'll start calling Oil co. today to see what rates we can get with a contract.

Re: NEED HELP!!! Those who have OIL homes!

They should refill the tank now, 62 degrees and its freezing out, you can bust pipes

Tell the owners to at least fill it

def bring that up...if you run out and it has to be serviced to start it up again...it will be a nightmare for you. Believe me Chat Icon

We recently switched to Devoe in Medford. He was at our house in less than one hour. I believe we paid $1.72.

We locked in with Slomins at $2.39/gal and the service contract is $99/year. So far we've only had good experiences with them.

We called every company in the phone book and locked into a rate. Call and see who's got the best deal out there right now.

I would take the matter up w/your lawyer. There should be some sort of agreement that the tank is full upon moving in.

Actually, if the tank is full you would have to repay the sellers for the fillup.
And 62 degrees is not going to let the pipes freeze. We have ours set at 65 when we are home and 58 when we are out.

You should have your lawyer check the contract for a contingency regarding the oil, if not then the sellers just have to leave you with a minimum amount.

We used Honesty last time $1.70/gallon. After your first fillup, you may want to look into contracts - depending on how much you or DH knows about burners, etc.

Congrats on the house!!!Chat Icon

When was the last time you stepped outside? It's not 62 degrees anymore - more like 30 degrees. Chat Icon Chat Icon

The house thermostat is set at 62 degrees on the main floor (not sure what they have it set at for upstairs).

I just spoke with my lawyer, and they're going to raise it with the owner that maybe he could get it half way filled and we'll reimburse him, so this way, we have heat while we're moving boxes in and having contractors come in to do some work before we officially move in.

In the mean time, I'm calling all your recommendations to get rates.

Thanks gals!

Nah, it's fine. 2 weeks ago there was over half a tank when we were there measuring the rooms, and now the tank is empty since the cold weather came in, so it worried us a little with the weather reports for the next week.

Re: NEED HELP!!! Those who have OIL homes!

We have slmonis Im annoyed with them they are big liars Chat Icon And I think its stupid they charge you 99.00 for the service contract (ours was 130 after tax) when other companies are giving it to you for free for locking with them.
