Need help with a random question

I am re-doing my bathroom, and I wanted to remove the tub and replace it with a shower only. I have heard from someone who just re-did their house that the plumber told them that at least one bathroom in the house must have a full tub. Since I only have one bathroom (for the time being anyway) Does this mean that I need to have a tub?

We are planning on expanding next year or the year after, but I don't want to be put in a situation where we cannot sell our house if we need to move.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks! Chat Icon

If I remember correctly, you do have to have at least one tub in the house for some type of code that complies with a disability requirement...I think. You should definitely call the building and zoing department in your town to find out.

ETA: Even if no one in your home is disabled.

You should keep a tub if its your only bathroom.

I never heard of any code that requires one tub in a home but as someone suggested, you should touch base with your town to confirm.

I did ask the question once in the past on this forum. Someone responded saying for resale having at least one bath is beneficial. I agree. But, if you're remodeling and plan to add one later I see no problem going ahead with your plans.

Re: Need help with a random question

personally living in an apartment with just a shower stall, I miss a tub. I would never remove a tub for a shower for resale & covient purposes. If its a tub with a shower then no biggie.

I know that a tub is really helpful for when you have kids - I would keep it!

Re: Need help with a random question

Strictly for resale purposes, I would keep the tub. Also a tub is much easier to bath a child in.

Put your shower stall in when you expand.

Re: Need help with a random question

I looked at few houses with one bathroom, and only a shower. - I didn't like it.
If you're not planning to see any time soon, then I'd say do it -

Re: Need help with a random question

The problem we are having is this. My Basement is constantly damp because of a high water table. We are trying to find a way to channel the water for better drainage but we so far have been unsuccessful. The washer & dryer are down there & if I do not take the clothes out the second they are done, the begin to smell like mold or mildew. It is a PITA. Plus I have no interior stairs to get to the basement so I have to go out by back door, across my deck ,down those steps, along the driveway , open the barn door, down more steps....you get the idea. We were going to being the washer-dryer into the Bathroom, and where the tub is now. It is the only place it will fit unless we put them in the attic, or the nursery, which I do not want to do. So we have room for the W/D with a shower, but not with a full bath.

Are you planning on selling your house soon? If not, then do what would be best for your water and dampness situation. You can make it up to code when you are planning on moving. I don't think anyone is going to check to see if you have a full tub or not before then.

what about your kitchen? Is there room for the W/D up/down unit in there? I've seen this A LOT especially in Levitts. I agree going outside would be a PITA for laundry.

Re: Need help with a random question

I agree with the above 2 poster's. If you have no immediate intentions of selling, do what works best for your situation now. Is the kitchen an option (for housing the w/d)?

Re: Need help with a random question

you can fit a w/d in a closet - thats what we have in my current house (its a two fam, and my mom didnt want to have to go all the way tot he basement for laundry)

do you have a closet you can put it in? Especially if you get a stackable one.

Re: Need help with a random question

To answer all of the above questions:

I cannot put it in my kitchen. Every single wall has cabinets that we are using.

I am in a ranch, so we are already short on closet space. The only available closet is the nursery, and I am not sure how safe that is once the baby comes.

We are not planning on moving, but I do not know 100% if I am going back to work after the baby & if not I'd like to move off of LI where we do not need 2 incomes, so I do not want to shoot myself in the foot, so to speak.

We got a stackable unit already, so that is a big obstacle overcome. The only other option is to put it in my sunroom & move my computer back into my Bedroom. The washer & Dryer will cover the windows thoughChat Icon

I should have thought of this before we bought the house

I wouldn't get rid of the tub. Especially with baby on the way.

How about a bedroom closet (other than the nursery b/c I wouldn't put it in there) somewhere else in the house? A linen closet? Transfer the stuff in the other closets to the closet in the nursery. That's the closet you'll probably use the least anyway.

PUT IT IN THE SUNROOM THEN. Sorry for the caps, but I wouldn't not get rid of a tub when all you could do is move a computer.
