Need help with choosing a business name.
I am in the process of starting a commercial writing business. One of my first steps will be setting up a website. I have spent 2 days looking at sites by other CWs and I am torn between two options: 1) just use my name- i.e. www.janedoe.com 2) use my maiden name which lends itself to clever but possibly trite plays on words- my maiden name is Dunne so there is a lot I could do.
The other consideration is that when I google my maiden name there are actually several people who have my name, so I don't know how high I'd come up in a search. Also, ironically, one person with my name is a poet so even if you put in my name with "writer" you might get her stuff before you get me!
My married name, on the other hand, is pretty unusual but plain, so it's not too unwieldy to spell and other things I've written come up first in Google, which is a plus.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Need help with choosing a business name.
Since you are doing a website the first thing to check is domain name availability...play around with some of the names you were considering and see if they are even available....that might help you narrow it down. Also consider keeping it short so that people typing in the web address won't have misspellings...and your e-mail address which is linked to your site won't be too long. I'd start there...way back when I incorporated I also had to pick some alternative names for my business incase my first choice was already taken by another company. So i started with the web stuff first. Good luck!!
