Need help with DH's 30th Birthday cake for Saturday...
I had one all planned and last night he says he just wants a simple chocolate cake with home made frosting....so he threw a wrench in my plans....anyone have a good recipe for a cake like this, i want to do it from scratch, no boxed cake for this one....we have about 15 people coming over Saturday if that helps....

I use the recipe on the back of the Hershey's cocoa tin for "The Perfect Chocolate Cake." I learned this from Ophelia's cake posts.
You can get the recipe for it online as well. I'd link it for you, but my Blackberry is not cooperating today. The batter is thin, but it makes a nice cake at the end! I used it for DS's birthday cake recently.

I agree with this. This cake and icing is delicious!

Re: Need help with DH's 30th Birthday cake for Saturday...
I am not a chocolate cake fan, but this is called goofy cake, and it might look odd but it tastes great, esp. with the frosting.
Beat with mixer: 3 c. Sifted Flour 2 c. sugar 2 t. soda 2/3c. cocoa 1 t. salt
Add to above mixture & mix well: 2 t. vinegar 2 t. vanilla 1 c. salad oil Add slowly: 2c. water
Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees in greased & floured 9 x 13 pan. (Line bottom with wax paper if removing the cake from pan.)
Creamy Frosting Cook until thick & let cool: 4 T. flour 1 c. milk
Mix: 1/2 c. butter 1/2 c. shortening 1 c. sugar 2 t. vanilla 1 t. almond flavoring (optional) 2 T. powdered sugar
Cream butter, shortening, and sugar. Beat 4 minutes; then add flour mixture. Beat 4 minutes. Frost cooled cake.
