Need help with Thanksgiving, volunteering & food donation ideas
Each year, I setup a food collection box for The Retreat, a local organization that helps victims of domestic violence.
However, for myself and my company, we are also looking at other ways to give our time, money or food this time of year.
Do you have any experience with this? Favorite things to do, places to donate your time or food to?
Thanks.

Re: Need help with Thanksgiving, volunteering & food donation ideas
Personally, I love volunteering for animal shelters. There are many on LI that love help.
There was an organization I recall from my LIW days that my rabbi donates food to-Harvest something-I will google it and edit my post.
Also, I would contact Department of Social Services because there are many needy children and families this time of year who receive aid from social services and I know they do food drives for families.
Sounds like you have a very civic minded company!

Is this The Retreat in East Hampton? I just saw a flier at my work that you can sponsor families at the Retreat, anywhere from a single mother to a mother with 5 children. I'm assuming this is for the December holidays. It would be nice for a company to take a few families and provide toys, clothes and food for the holidays.

Re: Need help with Thanksgiving, volunteering & food donation ideas
Thank you! I would love any info you could give me.
It's mostly me that's civic minded and I take my company along for the ride. I find they are more willing to help when I do the organizing.

Yes, it is. A friend of a friend volunteers with them and we collect food for Thanksgiving for them. We are a very small office and some of us are having severe financial and family issues. So I thought volunteering time would be something everyone can handle.

Re: Need help with Thanksgiving, volunteering & food donation ideas
Every holiday season our office staff donates what each of us would normally spend for a secret santa gift and each of the bosses will double the total amount. We also donate the free turkey or ham certificates we get from the supermarket. We donate it to the Harry Chapin Food Bank/LI Cares.
