Need ideas for black and white bathroom remodel
We're re-doing our main bathroom! Yay! 
We need ideas - fast! We're redoing our (small) main bathroom down to the studs. Demo starts next Friday. We're going to buy all our own stuff but I've never done anything like this and would love some creative input.
Our house is from the 50's and the kitchen still has the awesome original sink and cabinets so we're kind of "retro" there and want to carry that vibe to the bathroom right next to it. We're thinking:
- Hexagonal black and white tile floor
- White porcelain sink (with black vanity? or pedestal?) and toilet
- Tile 4 feet up the wall and ceiling-high in the shower - some combo of black, white, and maybe gray?
Can you guys help us refine our ideas? I love the idea of a black and white bathroom but is a black and white floor with white tile walls too sterile looking?
Please help!

Whoa, that's extreme! It's cool, but we're going for something a little more traditional.
We're thinking something more like this but not with subway tile:

Why not lower the cost and do wainscotting?
i like the blue with the black and white ALOT.
not so sure how i feel about gray.
it reminds me of my old girlfriend's bedroom... just add the glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and i'll feel right at home!

How about adding turquoise to the black & white.
So this pic is a little on the country side, but you get the idea of the color with the B&W.
You can really see in this picture how the turquoise can play a cool part. It might be too much of course. Cool pic thought. 
This one sort of gave me an idea for your bathtub area. You can put turquoise as an accent maybe into that area.
We are doing our laundry room with turquoise walls and B&W accessories. I can't wait to finish it.

The second pic is the bathroom from our former house we just sold!
ETA: We had two black and white retro bathrooms, the one shown had silver sage and our half bath had more of a turquoise. Great color combos.

We gutted our bath 4 years ago and redid it in white subway tiles with the b&w hex floors, chrome fixtures and Tiffany-blue walls (BM Tranquil Blue).
About a year ago we added crown moulding, changed the floor moulding, regrouted the tiles in a grey and repainted the walls in a silver-grey - a shade lighter than our LR & hallway which is BM Adagio. I much prefer the grey now...it is more my style - the Tiffany-blue was a little bright.
In hindsight, I would have pushed more for the wainscotting & brushed nickel fixtures.

if you have the money in the budget look into black and white marble tile. That is what we are going to save up for the floor, then white subway tiles (either plain or embossed) with a marble black bullnose (think that is the term) with dark cherry cabinets and white toilet, tub and sink top.
I love pedestal if going totally vintage but leaves you with no storage so I rather have cabinets. Lucky for us our bathroom has nice closet space but we still are getting a cabinet.

I am also planning to re-do my bathrom & am going for a similar look.
My complex was built in 1948-49 & some units have the originals bathrooms--which are pink! So, you probably don't want to go too much with a period bathroom! 
The black & white look was very popular in the pre-war buildings I lived in previously & I miss it.
Can I ask why you don't want subway tiles?
My friend did white crackled subway tiles with a gray glass tile border & it is beautiful. It is classic with a modern touch, not totally retro.
She has a white cabinet & black counter. I don't think I want a black counter top though.

The black & white look was very popular in the pre-war buildings I lived in previously & I miss it.
This is my experience too! My first apartment in Brooklyn was from the 40's (it had one of those elevators where you had to physically push the outer door open!) and my bathroom was candy pink tiles with a black border, hexagon tile floor, pink tub... I kind of loved it. Oh it was UGLY, but I loved the charm. Now I'm in a Levitt house from 1951 and it's YELLOW - yellow 4 x 4 tiles, a yellow toilet and bathtub, and beige floor. Again, not so pretty to look at but totally charming and we get compliments on it.
So I want to go for the funkiness of a retro bathroom without the hideousness of the bright pink or pee-yellow (as one friend fondly called the walls/toilet of my current bathroom )

Thank you! The bathroom she redid really has the look we're gong for. I checked out the site where she got her sink/vanity and they have tons that I love... that are like $800 before shipping and not available until August.  But the pictures are great! And it shows me that a hex floor can look perfect with subway tiles.

Jenn, our kitchen does have metal cabinets!
The sink goes all the way from the stove to the dishwasher. This pic was taken soon after we moved in. We are going to eventually put up a real backsplash (there's red contact paper there now!) - maybe a glass tile mosaic with reds and blacks? You cannot see the bathroom from the kitchen so the colors don't have to mesh, but the bathroom is the first door on the left behind the stove, so I like the idea that both are "retro."

Don't do any gray & stay mostly white. White bathrooms are timeless & clean looking. It is also easy to repaint & change towels when you want a new look.
