need idea's for keeping dog calm
SO my dog Maggie Ruptured her knee. She's going in sometime next week for the operation to repair.
Here's my problem . Maggie is a pitt mix very hyper, loves to run and play ball she sleeps on my couch. I have to keep her from jumping and running for 3 months after the operation.
Also she has never pooped on the leash when ever i have walked her had her to the vet she never pooped on a leash
any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: need idea's for keeping dog calm
Awww poor baby. I dont' have much advice but I would imagine that for at least a few weeks after the surgery she is not going to feel like running and jumping. I am sure she will be sore in her knee and probably be on pain meds etc...
When my female cat was fixed I was told not to let her jump around etc for a while because of her stitches- I was a nervous wreck because she was only a kitten- try getting a kitten to sit still! But the vet told me that animal's bodies, much like people's, tell them to slow down when they need to.. and they will know and in turn take it easy. And I did notice that she was a lot more mellow for a few days until she healed.
Maybe ask your vet for some advice as well- I am sure they have dealt with this situation before.
Good luck!

Re: need idea's for keeping dog calm
This definitely won't work for every dog, but one of mine lays down and stays put if she feels "contained" - if we put her in a harness, or a doggie t-shirt, she just wants to lay there and sulk and not move. We don't do it often at all because she hates it, but if we really needed her to be still for a while, it's not hurting her, so we would do it. It can't hurt to try...
What about crating? Do you do that at all? That would keep her from running and jumping for sure.
Also, ask the vet if they have any suggestions. If it gets really hard to keep her from running and jumping, they might even consider prescribing a mild sedative or telling you to use Benadryl. See what they say to do.
As far as pooping while on the leash, just keep trying. If she has to go and doesn't have access to the yard otherwise, she'll learn to go while on the leash.
