Need office related advice, HELP!!!
my old boss just moved to our office out of state, and new boss took over within the last month.
Last week i miscarried. Sunday I started having symptoms. Monday I called up the office, told them what was happening that i was going to the doctor that day and was hoping it wasnt. I spoke to the ONLY female in the office which happens to be MY bosses wife. Later that day when the doctors appt was over(painful & confirmed i was losing the baby) I called up the girl again. First to check that a quote went out on my desk, then to say i would be home to try and pass it naturally so hopefully i wouldnt have to have the operation. She said take as long as i need. Wednesday she(not my boss) calls up to check if i will be in and says she willl tell her boss that I wont be in the rest of the week(keep in mind shes the only female and we are only 7 people in our office)......
FAST FORWARD TO TODAY... I get an email from my old boss to me, and the other guy who we share a boss, and he says that we are to report in to our new boss, if we are out ill we must call our new boss. These are the rules, calling into a coworker is not ok in the past, and will not be acceptable int he future either.
This p*ssed me off as my body is still physically recovering outside of the emotional loss.... I'll be writing a letter to hime tomorrow in response, and cc: the hr lady in atlanta..... Is there something he did wrong outside of the complete insensitivity??? Obviously if I was sick with a cold I would call my boss....

Re: Need office related advice, HELP!!!
I have never worked in an office where it was acceptable to "call in sick" to a co-worker rather than a manager...no matter what the problem was.
I do not think any "rights" were violated. I think your boss has every right to ask that one of the bosses get the sick call

I am very sorry about your miscarraige.
As for work, I think you were wrong to not speak to your boss personally at some point on Monday or Tuesday. It was not up to the co-worker to say take as long as you need. I am sure your boss would permit the same thing.

Normally I would say you should talk to the boss- but in this case, the "coworker" is the bosses wife... this makes it a little different to me... but I don't think any rights were violated, he was just completely insensitive. I am so sorry for your loss

I agree on all accounts including I'm sorry for your miscarriage.
eta. no rights were violated. Not only was there no change in policy as to who you need to call in sick but even if there was they have the right to put another policy in place with little notice. While almost every company gives paid sick days but they aren't required to pay you for them by law.

Sorry.
I do agree though. I know it's easier to speak to women about certain things but I'm sure an adult man would have understood.
