Need Opinions...

I'm sure some of you know already that DH and I have been actively searching for a new addition to our family....since November.

We fell in love with a 4 y/o Yorkie, but the foster mom freaked when we handed in our donation/adoption fee and decided to keep her. Since then, we've decided that a Yorkie would be best for us - our living situation, size, and DH grew up with one.

We've gone through a few rescue organizations and shelters and have submitted applications.

A friend of mine called me up a few days ago and stated that her neighbor was looking to rehome her 5 y/o Male Yorkie. Since then, I have spoken to the owner and found out the following:

- She is going abroad for schooling which is why she's looking to rehome "ChuChu"
- he's 5 y/o and not Neutered
- She's asking for a $150 "adoption fee" for him and a lot of his items - 40 lb. bag of food, 2 bowls, sweater, leashes, costumes, etc.
- She wants to bring "ChuChu" to come meet us on Monday to make sure our home and of course our intentions are what she feels comfortable with.

Now, I have absolutely no problems with anything above, but I'm compiling a list to ask when I meet them. Would anyone mind helping me out as far as what to look at, take notes of, and to ask?

So far:
- His papers, I know she either bought him or adopted him at 3 months old - she would have received something right?
- His medical/vet records, up to date on shots
- Is he housebroken - what's his schedule?
- His food schedule

Re: Need Opinions...

I would ask if he's ever been bred and also if there are any personality issues you need to know about (strangers, children, other pets, etc.)

Ditto.

In addition I would ask if they ever participated in any formal training with the dog, as well as how often he was socialized with other dogs & if so of what breeds. The fact that the dog is not neutered- honestly I'd ask why. For a small dog in particular (like under 5 lbs) it can be tricky to put them under anethesia. You will need to know if this is the reason they held off.

Also ask about grooming & play schedule, and for goodness sake get everything in writing. Make sure that the "adoption fee" is clear that it is for an adoption on a contract.

Re: Need Opinions...

Thank you so much ladies - I'm writing all of this down. I too did find it strange that he wasn't neutered, and that's FIRST on my list of why's.

I have one more question - what happens if/when she comes back to the US (if she does) and wants to reclaim her dog - is there a simple contract that I can make up and have her sign? Are there ownership papers out there for such a thing?

Yeah that is why I am saying get it all in writing. I did not want to post the reason, & was going to FM you with my standard contract. I have it at home & I will post later. It says something to the affect of the adoptor relinquishing all rights of ownership and care of dog, and the adoptee is entering into agreement in good faith as the new owner of the dog....something like that.

Great questions.

I would also wonder why the dog wasn't fixed.
If you take him, make sure you get copies of his vet vaccinations.

If you do take him, please get him neutered. I could recommend some great low cost spay/neuter places.

Good luck.

Re: Need Opinions...

OK I found it in an old email. Now I never had a lawyer look at it, so you may want to crosspost & ask some of the legal gals on here if this is a valid contract, but here is the ownership bit:
___ I hereby understand that this transaction is a transfer of ownership of _____________ (name of pet) a _______________ (age of pet) ______________________(gender/breed of pet). Current and future claims of ownership to this pet by the original owner are hereby relinquished to the new adopter. The adoption fee of $___________ covers the initial adoption of aforementioned pet. I further acknowledge that all liabilities of ownership of aforementioned pet are transferred at time of completed adoption.

I had a yorkie when I was growing up that we did not get neutured. It was due to medical reasons. He had this cough and the doctor said it had to due with the size of his esphogus. He said it would be dangerous to put him under anesthesia.

The anesthesia methods have changed in the past few years. This was also the advice given to me by my vet for my Pug (they have a similar problem with their trachea/espohagus). Now they have smaller tubes used to administer a less potent & easily revived-from sleeping gas. I had him neutered at 5 yrs old when they had begun to use the new anesthesia with confidence.

Definitely talk to any vet to make sure they do a bronchial tube for the anesthesia administration. However, even with the newer methods the weight of the dog can still be a consideration to not undergo any procedure requiring anesthesia.
