Need Opinions about Flooring & Ceiling Layout (poll)

OK, here is the room. Our future Family Room, if we can just get it done already. Where the picture was taking from is where you walk into the room from upstairs. The TV will be on the far wall.


These are the Ceiling Planks we are using. You install them just like you would laminate flooring (tongue & groove system & off setting the joints). I believe they are either 4 or 5 inches wide.


This is most likely the flooring we are getting. It is 5 inches wide.


So the question is, which way would you lay the flooring and the ceiling? Horizontal or Vertical? TIA! I believe the room is about 25 ft. long and about 12 ft. wide.

I'm a PITA. I like the ceiling horizontal (short ways) and the flooring vertical (long ways).

I seriously CANNOT WAIT to see this room Jen!!!!!

I'm thinking Horizontal, but not sure.

Can you use a program to draw the lines both ways on that pic to see which you like better? My first thought is vertically from the angle of the pic but I'm not sure if seeing it with lines would make a difference. I would think horizontally would give the illusion of shortening the room and vertically would lengthen it.

I was told it should go the direction in which the length is longer. So I believe by looking at the photo it would be vertical. However in my current apartment it goes the reverse of the rule and it looks fine. I think that the ceiling and flooring should go the same way.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I was doing some research this morning and I found what some experts say.

This is what one of the sites said.

"Layout - All Important

Laminate flooring can be installed in any direction. However, there are some things to consider. Every manufacturer would like to see you install it so that the planks are parallel with the direction in which natural light streams into the windows. Installing the flooring in this manner will make for a better looking floor. Why? If the sun beams enter the room at a low angle during early morning or late afternoon and travel perpendicular to the planks, it can sometimes make the floor look like it is wavy."

So if that is the rule of thumb, then we should be laying it horizontal when looking at this picture I posted. I guess it will all depend if we are laying it or someone else is, because I think vertical will be harder with the layout of the room for us, but might not be hard for a professional though.
