What we do is put DD down in her crib, then get on the floor next to it & hold her hand until she falls asleep. It takes 10-30 minutes for her to fall asleep.

Re: need other sleep training methods BESIDES CIO
the other night DS woke up screaming for no reason and would not go back down. We tried letting him cry it out, etc but to no avail.
What FINALLY worked was I went in and hugged him (dd not take him out of the crib). I hugged him until he calmed down and then layed him down. He started to cry again but I rubbed his back and kept saying "Shhh Shhh, it's OK". Once he settled more I took my hand off him and again he started to cry and I whispered the "shh shh it's ok I am here" he settled again. then slowly I made my way out of the room, taking a step back every few minutes and f he criee I would repeat the "shhh, I'm right here, you're ok, shhh" and he wold calm down again. I got to the door after about 20 minutes or so. By the time I reached the door he was very relaxed and exhausted. He cried for 10 seconds and put his head down.
I was surprised it worked honestly. But he was visibally upset for some reason and I figured he just needed to know I was 'there' so I tried it and it worked thankfully.

This is exctly what I do to calm DD down and put her to sleep . I don't have to do it too often ,but it works every time.
