Whitestone and Bayside Queens are right over the bridge and have very good schools.
Also Throggs Neck and Woodlawn are nice areas of the Bronx--although honestly I do not know much about the schools.

Best bet is probably whitestone or bayside in Queens. They both have good school districts, safe neighborhoods and you can probably find houses to rent there.

Kath they can check out Riverdale too, technically part of the Bronx, but feels like lower W'chester, with excellent public schools!

Unless they plan on sending their kids to private school, I don't think Yonkers is a good option. There are lots of nice areas in Westchester that have good school districts and are an easy commute to the Bronx. I live in White Plains and for being such a large district the schools are pretty darn good and test well. Then there are towns like Harrison, Scarsdale, Rye that offer excellent schools but the cost of living is quite a bit higher.

I grew up in TN and had tons of friends from Woodlawn and most ppl I know (myself included) went to Catholic schools bc I dont think the public schools are the best. Where is the naval center exactly?

What about Floral Park Village or Franklin Square?
