Need rec's for Orlando hotels (near disney)!
Sooooooooooo, we decided to go to DISNEY for 3 days while we're down in FL in May (instead of a cruise or the keys). 
We were only there once in dec '05 (first time for both of us) and only for one day. We went to the magic kingdom.
For this trip we want to definitely do Universal and one other park. Any suggestions?
We also have no clue where to stay. We want to keep it under $150/night and we don't have to stay in the disney resort. Let me know if you have any rec's for hotels outside disney!

We've stayed at the Radisson and it was fine, near some good restaurants and close to the parks. (I'll ask my husbad if he remembers the exact location).
At Universal, we love Portofino Bay—so pretty and you just hop on the ferry to go to all the Universal attractions. You also get to wait on shorter lines at Universal parks if you are staying at a Universal property.
At Disney, we love the Polynesian—I always thought it looked "Brady Bunch goes to Hawaii cheesy" from afar, but it's so much nicer once you are actually there.
Grand Floridian is too pretentious for my taste.
As for the second park—Epcot!! I love Epcot!! But if you guys are into thrill rides, you might want to do Universal's Islands of Adventure instead of Universal Studios.

Thanks evenedan!! So you think Epcot over seaworld? We're not thrill ride people, we both aren't into roller coasters, so we're just going to do universal (not islands of adventure).

I haven't been to Seaworld since I was little and I don't really remember it, so I can't really say which is better. But I went back to Epcot last year for the first time since I was little as well and I loved it there. I'm not a roller coaster person at all either, but Epcot has a few rides that are really fun, but not scary (Soarin' and Test Track are my favorite). The countries are also fun to check out and walk through. You can get some beers in Germany and have dinner in Italy etc.
Hopefully some other people can give you some insight on the parks. My husband and I really enjoyed Epcot, but maybe others feel differently. I don't want to point you in the wrong direction.

Honestly, if you only have a few days in Orlando, stick to Disney (and, yes, definitely Epcot!). Seaworld is great - but I would use "missing it" as an excuse to go back. But that's just me!
If it's cost you're concerned about.... why not try Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Hotel? It's a great hotel, DH and I have been there a few times. It's in a nice central spot, too. Look it up on disney's website for details. I suggest it because it's affordable. It's maybe $160/night (max). Also, you'd be able to take advantage of Disney's transportation much more easily.
I agree that the Polynesian is amazing, but you're looking at a MUCH larger cost to stay there.

I personally like the Wilderness Lodge or the Beach Club.
As for things to do, I love all of the Disney parks: Magic Kingdon, Epcot, MGM and Animal Kingdon.
I also loved Universal and I would recommend that too if you have time.

Peabody was sooooooooooooooooo nice
we got to stay there bcwe got stuck in florida when the hurricane hit and our hotel was soo booked up, we couldnt stay there one more nite
anyways, it was very classy....i loved it!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the Disney Port Orleans & Disney Wilderness Lodge suggestions. Both are beautiful resorts. Depending on the time of year, you can get reasonable rates for either hotel.

I would NOT stay in Port Orleans.
My co-worker stayed there and got bit to shreds by bed bugs. I saw her wounds and the video she took...Disney pd her loads of hush money (she told us right after it happened, before the payoff).
The peabody rocks!
Universal has three hotels that should be able to accomodate you.
1. The hard rock
2. Portofino
3. Royal Pacific
If you stay on Universal property you will be a LOT closer to Seaworld than you will be to Disney, although its probably only a 15-20 minute cab ride.

We stayed at the All Star resorts one year, it was very reasonable, less than $150 a night...

We stayed at the Royal Plaza located in downtown Disney- For 2 days, I totally reccommend it. Its a pretty decent hotel, great location for a usually reasonable price. I would def check out MGM & Universal Studios- 2 of my fav parks. Epcot is really nice too.

Expedia has peabody for $135/night (right in our budget). Let me know your suggestions!!! TIA.
We figured it would be cheaper to stay outside disney and since we have a car (we're driving down from NY) we don't need the disney transportation, although it would be nice.

i wuold stil maybe look at the disney properties, even though you'll have your car... we used to drive down every year growing up, but we would stay on disney property, and its just sooo much nicer being able to take their transportation to the parks... you don't have to driev around the parking lots looking for a spot, and the buses or monrail drop you right off at the park entrances, so it does save time.
i can't help ya with where to stay though, because we always stayed at the disney fort wilderness campground ( my parents had a camper)... so it wans't one of the hotels, but it was great  we did go to wilderness lodge a lot though, and its gorgeous there!

Just re-read your original post.
Peabody is closer to Universal than Disney...IMO Universal is 100% better than Disney...its geared more towards adults
also, the water parks there are aweseome...u cannot go wrong
blizzard beach is a fav of mine
also, i think debg posted a link to a new water park there??
check it out!

We had the deluxe tower room. The bathroom was HUGE!!! Room was really nice =) We did not use the hotels transportation. We rented a car. I HIGHLY reccommend tht!!!

We stayed in Disney but not a disney resort. We stayed at the Grosvenor. It was awesome!! Great price and great rooms.
It was a walk away from Downtown Disney which was great because it was just DH and I and we went down there every night and just had to walk home after drinking
You also get to take the shuttles they offer because you are on Disney property. The also have package deals where you can get the tickets, a character breakfast, and a fried chicken picnic delivered to your room.  
Have fun!!!!!!!
FYI: I loved Disney 100% better then Universal and I am an adult
