Need Some Advice for DH

Since I know nothing about being a teacher I figured you ladies would be my best bet. My husband was just notified that he wasn't getting his contract renewed (long story --- part of me is a little happy because I really detest his job and school). Anyway, we're expecting our first baby over the summer so needless to say this is very stressful for me financially to think about possibly me being the only one working and then having an unpaid maternity leave. Ughh. anyway, some teachers at his district advised him to do a letter of resignation so at least he can say that he resigned himself rather than not being offerered a non-tenured position. But, the would exclude him from collecting unemployment. Is that really the best thing to do? TIA!

Untenured teachers sign a yearly contract - his district just chose to not renew his contract. It's not that he was fired or he quit - his contract expired. I don't think a letter is going to do anything.

And I didn't think in this situation he would be entitled to unemployment either way, but I could be wrong.

It does entitle him to unemployment. This happened to me a few years ago. A bunch of us were not asked back and told to submit letters of resignation. When you apply for unemployment they verify it with the district and personnel will tell them exactly what happened. I technically resigned but still was able to collect un-employment until I found another job. I'm sorry this happened to you. Good Luck

Re: Need Some Advice for DH

Thanks for the advice. I told him to go back to his prinicipal and talk about it. The principal already told him he would give him a good reference and all and genuinely felt bad doing it given that I was pregnant so I think that maybe he would give us some guidance as to whether or not he would fight us if an unemployment claim came through. We'll see what happens but it would definately make this a little less stressful if I knew he had some source of income while he is looking for a new spot. Thanks!
