Need some serious help....agressive case of Tinea Capitis??

Anyone dealt with this? I thought it was a bad case of excema but it's a ver severe case of Tinea Capitis or fungal infection of the scalp also known as ringworm. The ped said it's very rare to see a case in New England, it usually shows un in southern states. They did the light on the back of his head and the affected area lit right up and they scraped some of it for testing but said Liam has a very severe case of it and might require systemic treatment which are toxic so they want to make sure before they do that. My little guy is only 3 months old. Chat Icon

Right now we are doing a topical cream on the back of his head but won't see results for probably 4-8 weeks because of the severity of it. It explains the head shifting because he is trying to itch his head and why he can't sleep (he wakes every 30 minutes the last week). They said there is a special shampoo but also that it's very contagious, I have a 2 year old daughter....any have any luck with dealing with something like this? Any advice would be appreciated....I have never dealt with anything like this before...

This is what it looks like:

Did this just show up looking like this, or did it get worse by the day? I would get whatever is needed to stop it. The last thing you need is a house filled with this. It looks pretty bad, i'd get that shampoo asap.

He has had it since he was 4 weeks old but i just thought it was excema. He got better, then worse, then better and finally yesterday i just took him. They think it's of feline origin but we won't know for sure until the test results come back but anything his head touches cannot have any contact with anyone else. But DH and i have been kissing his head all the time because we thought it was just excema.

My nephews passed this back and forth to each other for what feels like forever... turns out they got it from mats that weren't clean at the place they do jujitsu. A lot of kids at the place were getting it.

If I remember correctly they took something orally and also topically.

Oh man, poor baby! Since it's highly contagious, can you put a light cotton baby hat on him? Or is it not recommended to keep it covered? I'm just thinking with you pregnant and with your DD only being 2, I'd try to contain it as much as possible for the next couple/few months until he's cleared.

Also did you ask if it's dangerous for the baby you're carrying? Since you've been kissing him and it's contagious - I imagine an adult might just be uncomfortable with it, but maybe it can affect the baby?

Im guessing you didn't see the posts on Facebook group. I miscarried about a month ago. The cottom hat idea is a good idea, i will have to look into that, i only have newborn ones and Liam has a huge head.

No, no I don't think you were rude at all. I figured you didn't see the posts about it. I appreciate the advice though if i was still pregnant, i would be very concerned about it.

My friends son had it last year.. and my husband had it many years ago... Both were treated by a prescription cream... My friends son never got it again.. My husband kept getting it back.. Found out, he was getting it from his cat.. It is treatable and your son won't remember it.. I know it is harder on us.. It will take some time, but it will get better...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Do you have cats? If you do you're going to need to treat the cats too. Or you're all likely to just keep getting it again and again and again.

I once got ringworm from my kitten when I first got her! Chat Icon

Since it is so contagious, I would make sure your DD isn't touching his head (obvious), I would make sure she is not putting her head down or touching anywhere he is laying.

Ask the doctor about putting a hat on. I know with some topical creams they don't want you to cover it because it changes how the skin absorbs it (you end up absorbing more into your skin if it's covered up)

Just do a lot of hand washing. And try your best to not let DD touch anything he has been playing with before you have a chance to wash it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
