Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
I figured this would be the best place to ask since I'm sure some of you had premies.
A very young soldier's wife in my DH's unit just gave birth to a 1 pound, 5 oz. baby girl. She was only 24 weeks pregnant. Both baby and mommy are doing well, but it looks like the baby will be kept in the NICU until around September.
On behalf of the unit, I'm putting together a basket of items for the family. Can anyone suggest things they might need (for both the baby AND the new parents)? I know the parents are staying in the hospital for about another week and they are over an hour from home, so I'm sure there's little things they need as well, but with the baby coming so prematurely, I cant imagine they were ready and have everything they need. If you had a premie what are some things that the hospital doesnt provide that you would have liked to have??

I would get GCs for restaurants that do take out (even Applebee's, Chilis, etc) and gas cards for the parents.
And maybe a few little preemie outfits.
Many for the family

Re: Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
I recieved some preemie clothes. I was so excited to dress my son in the NICU. It also helped for when he came home because none of the newborn stuff fit. Also, I bought fleece blankets at target for my son to use in the NICU. I wanted to him to have something personnal.
ETA I also got a hand and footprint frame kit. I did it while he was still in the NICU. I love looking at how small his feet and hands were.

ITA! It sounds like they will be doing some traveling back & forth, so the gas cards will come in handy. Preemie outfits are great---its so nice to see your little one dressed in something else besides a white tee & blanket! Just make sure it has snaps or buttons as the monitor wires just don't work with zippers!

I agree...I think GCs for restaurants near home and then possibly near the hospital as well.
Gas Cards also sound like a good idea if they are going to be doing a lot of travelling back and forth.

Re: Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
Many go out to them!!! Like PP said, I think gift cards to restaurants - so they won't have to worry about cooking after being at the hospital visiting their baby, etc - is a great idea as well as preemie clothing. Also, maybe it can be arranged to have someone come to clean the house for them twice a month? I am going to guess they will be spending a lot of time at the hospital with their baby and may not have time to keep up with house stuff.

Re: Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
I would have loved a book on preemies and their special needs both in the NICU and once home. At that young she may be sent home with an apnea monitor or other devices. There are also opthamalic(sp?) issues with babies that young, but I would check Amazon fro books like that and read the reviews

Re: Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
I loved that people send us gift certificates for food. Also for a peapod service b/c you dont have time to cook or shop when you are always running to the hospital. Preemie clothes were great and so were blankets . You were allowded to bring your own blankets to the NICU so the nurses could dress up the beds so we needed tons of them because they needed to be changed daily. HTH My heart goes out to the family its not an easy time. But it gets better!

There is a preemie book written by Dr Sears. It was great. It really explained things well. While you are in the NICU it is sometimes forgotten that you are not a medical person and this book was my reference guide.
I couldnt agree more with the gc's. Also some magazines maybe. I know I couldnt really read a whole book but I could scan magazines. Maybe too some little hats. An receiving blankets to make his/her bed up.
Lots of prayers to the little one and his family!

Re: Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
After almost 5 weeks, I just brought my DD home from the NICU today! I will say that GCs DEFINITLEY come in good use! Preemie clothes also. I LOVED that DD was dressed and comfy! We got a few cute outfits in Carters. It's a bit hard to find preemie clothes, but, they're out there.

Definitely gift cards. Restaurants, pea pod, and gas will all come in handy. Also when I had my preemie family and friends all cooked some meals and dropped them off at the house on various nights, that was so helpful.

gift cards to food places... mcdonalds, dunkin donuts, restaurants... when ds was in nicu we didnt cook at all....I couldnt imagine being an hour from the hospital having to do that... it was rough on us and we were only 20 minutes away...
a blanket is also nice as they are allowed it once they are stable.

Re: Need suggestions: VERY premature baby
I loved getting things for my son when he was in the NICU - my sister bought some things from this site items for preemies
One of my favorites was the journal to record every step forward and step backwards that you take when dealing with a premature baby (DS was born at 26 weeks at 1 lb 11 oz)
We also received some clothes, were able to put burp cloths in and over his bassinett (vs getting the expensive isolette covers - they cover the isolettes because the light bothers them)
Some of the clothing came in handy since he had tubes and wires that were moved all over the place each day and at least the nurses were able to dress him when we weren't able to be there. It was nice to show up and see DS in an outfit vs the swaddle.
that Mommy and her beautiful little girl are okay
