need time out advice plz! (fixed)

josh is almost 22 months and know's right & wrong (well at least with the few behaviors that he has). my problem is he'll put himself in time out when i give him a warning or if he's just acting silly. i've tried saying "you're not in time out" or just ignoring it but it's like a game to him now.

the reasons he goes in time out are: spitting on toys/furniture (something he only does with my parents), the rare biting, and if he's being super destructive after we've redirected him and asked him not to be many times (the main reasons for time out these days.)

when i really put him in time out he doesn't like it, so why is he putting
himself in time out for fun?Chat Icon

and what should i do when he puts himself in time out?

thanks!

When he puts himself in time-out...is it directly after he's done something where he shouldn't have - like where you say 'no' to him? Or is he just going there?

I think my response would be to ignore his actions and only concentrate on when you put him there. It's hard to understand kids because of the communication barrier but I truly believe that their actions are their way of learning. In some way he may be reinforcing/reviewing what he knows the action to be.

For example...when my son hears a new word he'll repeat it over and over and over again...makes you go crazy after a while but ultimately he is learning the word...how it sounds how it feels from his mouth and trying to relate it. I feel like Josh is doing this as well.

Hit enter too soon....
So as the parent I would not acknowledge a role in this part. If you didn't put him there I would say let him have his space.

he usually does it after he does something he knows he shouldn't, like throwing his toys everywhere. or when i just give him a warning. so it's nothing major but ignoring it hasn't helped yet. i guess i'll just keep at it.
thanks ang!

I have no advice, but I have a similar problem. I made a post yesterday, but nobody answered it Chat Icon yesterday's post about TO Basically...DD is not doing anything wrong, but when she doesn't want to do something, she will say, I want a time-out! Chat Icon
