Need to get my pup spayed....Friends of animals? Need help?
Ok....so I callled my vet to see how much it would cost to have Bella spayed and I almost dropped dead.....$500 I wasn't expecting it to be that much. So I went online to the friends of animals website and my vet was listed....so I called the vet back to ask if there would be any other fees in addition to the certificate and she said $160 to cover the pain meds and antibiotics. So with the $90 certificate plus the $160 it would come to $250.....thats how much I assumed it would be without one. Anyway, any suggestions for reputable place to take Bella thatt isn't a fortune?

I like going with the FOA certificate. First of all, you are using a regular vet, in this case your vet. Secondly, the money goes as a donation to spay and neuter strays.

your vet is expensive
though i no longer use him, i used dr. blauvelt in westbury on carmen avenue for a few years. He neutered my dog and spayed my grandparent's dog and two of my friend's pets...
it was the FOA certificate plus i believe $20 for pain meds and antibiotics... but i beleive since it would be the first time you would go there, he would also chage 50 for a physical....

$500 is absolutely ridiculous. You'd think that vets would want to help ENCOURAGE spay/neuter. It really makes me sick.
I don't live on LI anymore, but is there a Humane Society in Nassau or Suffolk somewhere? I recently found out that the Humane Society by us (Charlotte, NC) charges $20 for neuter and $40 for spay.
I wish I had known about it before we paid $260 to have our cat spayed 2 months ago.

$500 is actually not ridiculous for the area. When we first got Misty - and this was three years ago - most vets were quoting anywhere from $500 to $750 to spay her. Spaying is much more expensive than neutering. Neutering is minor surgery, spaying they have to open the stomach and remove the reproductive organs. You really don't want to go somewhere and have it done based on $$$ alone.

I used Friends of Animals to have my dog neutered. My vet participates.

My vet doesn't participate, and I just found out they charge $305.
Is this about right??
