Need tree Ideas....
We want to finish off our backyard this spring & DH & I are torn on what to put on our back wall to complete it. We have two circles that pertrude out of our wall & we were thinking of adding an ornamental tree in each circle to dress it up more. We were thinking a dwarf weeping cherry but I am not sure.
Can someone give us some ideas??
here is a picture of the circles (sorry it is bad)
This is the tree we have in the front that we thought of putting back there

I wouldn't recommend replanting the tree back there since the roots are always as large as the tree underground and to dig that up, you may kill one of the roots, and thus the tree.
What about planting a lilac bush in the backyard? It would add color and beautiness as well.

Re: Nee tree Ideas....
Tree roots are surface roots in that they only grow within the first two feet of soil. That planting bed is so high that I don't think a tree would be a good choice since the stone wall would block any other growth. Roots grow mostly horizontally, not vertically.
You could plant some great flowering shrubs though. It looks like you get a lot of sun, you have a LOT of options there.
What color flowers do you like? Do you mind bees or fragrance? If you do, a non-flowering shrub would be good.

I was not going to take the tree from the front of the house but we were going to get another similiar to that one.
I told DH that the roots would be a problem & I don't want to deal with that. Even a shrub would be nice but I am not sure what. We do have TONS of sun (pretty much all day). I don't really want to contend with bees.
I like vibrant colors. Could you suggest??

I agree with a tree being a problem because of the wall. Butterfly bushes, hydrangeas, spirea, lilac, burning bush would all be good colorful choices.

Re: Need tree Ideas....
Good list Kelly. Oooh yea, hydrangea would be great, I agree.
The only one I would be concerned about is burning bush. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's invasive?
Turn on your pop up blocker and then click this link. It's the top 10 landscaping shrubs with some information about each.

Thank you Tricia & Kelly...I am going to show DH tonight & see what he says.
We had a hydrangea back there last year & it died but then again I think I planted it too late....

See, there are some "invasives" that could be controlled by someone like me. Someone that has the diligence and time spent in the garden to properly keep it in it's place.
But let's face it, there aren't many of us that have the kind of time. Since a lot of invasives spread by birds and other animals, even with the best of efforts, they can still be a nuisance.
I'm erring on the side of caution and not planting it, although I did want to years ago. I get tons of suggestions when I google "alternatives to burning bush". Apparently, everyone else is looking for them too.
Thanks for the links Jen!
