Need your help please? Breeds, rescue and shelter info
I'm volunteering at a table for a charity event and I'm in charge of giving information on animal rescue. From there, it's open to any interpretation or ideas I have.
It's a family event so I'm trying to figure out what might be fun for kids to do that could help educate on animal adoption. Brinkley and Ginger will be with us, and I'll have info on Labs4Rescue and local shelters.
For adults thinking about adopting a pet, I was thinking about drawing up a list of the most popular breeds and the local rescue organizations that handle them, as well as how many of them are on the Petfinder list in shelters right now.
What do you think are the most popular breeds of dogs and cats out there right now?
If you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them too

Definitely Labs, Boxers, Golden Retrievers, Maltese, Shitzu...these are the kind of dogs I see most often.

Re: Need your help please? Breeds, rescue and shelter info
I feel like there is bulldog craze and I am seeing a bunch more english bulldogs and french bulldogs in the streets than before. I see many pugs and puggles too.
I think people love them because they are so laidback and goofy. They are also expensive and many people will probably love to hear about rescues.
poodle mixes are particularly popular too - they mix any breed with a poodle nowadays. "designer" dogs are controversial so I don't know how your shelter feels about them but it can be a way to show people that these "designer" dogs are essentially mixed breeds and there are TONS of them in the shelter!

Not a hugely popular breed but I know a lot about greyhound rescue and adoption and I work with a local group. If you're interested, let me know.

Are you limited to just dogs and cats? There are other rescues on Long Island, too -- bunnies, pot bellied pigs, various birds, etc.

Recently I walked through my local shelter and there were mostly pit or pix mixes there.
One of my dogs is a pitbull and he is by far, the most loving dog I've ever owned. He snuggles better than my DH but also snores louder than him too.

Meet Vito... One of my lifes regrets.. Dh rescued him and I was afraid of the breed.. I gave him to my neighbor.. That is MY DD... I am so happy he lives right next door..
