Need your opinion....traffic noise

We found the perfect house....great location.
the ONLY problem....I can hear traffic constantly when outside.
It's not terrible, as I will probably get used to it...but it just annoys me for some reason.
The house is one block parallel to a main road, but the backyard is towards the rest of the neighborhood.
During the winter, it will be worse because there will be no leaves to absorb the sound.

My family thinks i'm nuts. It doesn't bother my hubby...but it bothers me.
Would the traffice noise bother you?Chat Icon

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

ABSOLUTELY. I would never buy a house that I can hear traffic noise when outside. It IS a big deal if you like peace and quiet. We have passed up many perfect houses due to this exact issue.

I lived two blocks from the LIE and was miserable. Granted it is much bigger than a main road but in any case it was a major headache. I would never live that close again to a main road. I would keep looking. Chat Icon

OK, this is the second house I've lived in which is right by a highway.

The first one was right near that SI expressway, like 1/4 of a BLOCK away. I would only hear the noise on the third floor SOMETIMES or when there was a bad car accident with sirens.

Now I live about 1/2 from the LIE and I don't hear it at all, in fact, we don't live far from an airport either and we don't hear that either.

You really get used to it, and I have to say, my DS is a great sleeper b/c of itChat Icon

ITA! I would pass on a house if I could hear traffic. My general rule is that a house has to be 3-4 blocks away from a main road or we wouldn't even consider it.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

We lived on a corner 2 blocks from Park Avenue in Long Beach, at a 4-way stop sign. We were renters. (LEGAL renters. Chat Icon)

I agree that you get used to the noise - of the cars stopping at the stop sign and vrooming away, of the traffic going by, including the very loud motorcycles and big diesel trucks that would go by. We even got used to the sound of planes flying very low overhead, sometimes every 2 minutes.

However... When we moved, I really noticed the difference and one of our favorite things about our neighborhood is how quiet it is. Even with the train station just down the block. (they stop at the station so there isn't much heavy horn blowing)

You would probably be able to deal because you would be forced to. But in retrospect, I would not choose to live close so to a major road or under the JFK flight pattern again. That's just my husband's opinion and mine.

I would be ok with as as long as you can only hear it when you are outside.

I live 5 houses down from Nicolls road. Very rarely do we hear the road noise. Only is someone is gunning their engine or doesn't have a muffler.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

Is it a highway or just a busy road?? I grew up near a busy road and it wasn't a problem. I guess my mom's house is perpendicular to the road but she was only a few houses in from the road.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

I would pass

I can't sleep with the windows open in my current house b/c the road is so busy

I grew up on a main road- but we were up on a hill and set back far from the road- I never heard a thing

now I can't stand it

Same here!!

ETA: you also have to think re-sale value. if you're hesitant about it, but buy it and years down the line you want to sell, others will be hesitant about it too and you may have difficulty selling.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

I too was told that I'd get used to the noise. Well it's been 3 years and almost every day I say I want to move!! I absolutely HATE it!! When we're outside, you sometimes can't even talk to people because of the cars/motorcycles/trucks. If you're having second thoughts now I say don't do it.

This is not a sweater at Marshalls that has a tiny spot on it that you can try to get out or donate. It's a house and if you have an inkling it will bother you, chances are it will, either because it actually will be too loud or you will subconsciously make it too loud, kwim??? Chat Icon

the road is old Willets Path..and we can't hear the noise when we are inside unless the window are open.

I think I do make it loud.
We talked to one of the neighbors, and she said she doesn't even hear it anymore.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

It wouldn't bother me. Our co-op was on somewhat of a main road, and I did not mind the noise. If it was facing the main road I'd say no just for resale value, but I don't think hearing it would bother me.

I agree--think of the resale. We won't look at any that close to a main road. You will hear cars gunning their engines, motorcycles, etc. I want to be able to enjoy the serenity of my backyard.
