Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

I grew up 1 house in from the intersection of NHP road and Hillside avenue

When we bought this house it was so important not to hear cars going by all day and all night.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

I wouldn't buy a house that close to a main road. You might not hear it when in the house with windows closed, but when you do want the windows open or go outside, that is when you are going to really notice it. I love how quiet our block is. I walk outside and hear the birds in the trees. GL with your decision. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

My old home the backyard was 231 (Deer Park Ave). With the windows closed it was fine but with the windows open it was loud. We adjusted to the noise even the kids drag racing and the trucks driving all night long. But what I could not ge used to was the dirt and dust from the raodway. I had to continuously wash my curtains it was disgusting. I would not want to be that close to a road again.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

I'm not sure where on Old Willet's Path the house is located near but I would think the house would be okay there. Personally, I don't consider Old Willets to be a street where you are going to hear tractor trailers, cars drag racing or other types of noise that you would hear by a highway. Plus it's such a wooded street that I would think that would muffle any noise. I would buy a house there.

I agree..its not that main of a road. It is a one lane both ways. Are you able to see it from this house? Or you just hear it? If I can see it, I'd pass up on the house........if you can only hear it....I'd give it a 2nd thought Chat Icon

Traffic noise would definitely bother me if it can be heard from inside the house with windows open.

I would be ok with as as long as you can only hear it when you are outside.

I agree - I wouldn't want to live ON the main road, but near it wouldn't bother me as far as 'noise' goes .........But then again, I miss living in the middle of Manhattan .........Chat Icon

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

Thanks so much everyone.
We drove back there during the morning, afternnoon, and night. We stood outside and just listened. What we're hearing is the traffic from a road that is 1/2 mile away.

I got used to it after a while...so if we get the house for the right price....we will take it.
We just hear: a slight and constant shhhhhhhhhhhhh
If that makes sense.

same here. I was 2 blocks away from Sunrise Hwy growing up and it was never a problem. You got used to it. Just like my parents now have gotten used the train going by right in front of their houseChat Icon

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

We live within a couple of blocks of the SOB expressway & honestly the noise does not bother me. Since our front of the house faces the expressway, you don't really hear it that much in the backyard. I do agree that you do get use to the noise & honestly for me, it was not a deal breaker. The noise is not untolerable where that is all you hear.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

I prefer it growing up off LI (actually bothers me if it is too quiet!) but DH hates it and now with DS we would not live near a main road.

Re: Need your opinion....traffic noise

we just bought our house...a corner lot at a popular intersection.

there IS traffic noise while outside in the front yard...and we initially thought it would be bothersome...but it's really not that bad.

you do get used to it, and it's actually kind of comforting...silence I feel is far more bothersome.

if you REALLY love the house and location, the noise factor will take care of itself.

and if you can't hear it much in the backyard, you are golden.

honestly, as I revved up my leaf blower/vacuum for the first time yesterday, I felt bad for the cars driving by....THAT is some crazy noise! Chat Icon
