Negotiating salary questions...
If you're offered lower than you thought for a new job or the very low end of your range, would you negotiate?
If so, do you do it right then and there if they offer you the job? How do you say you want more money without them being turned off?
Oh and this is a job you REALLY want... it's perfect in every other way. Do you just take the salary they offer you (which is more than your current job) and hope for raises in the future or do you ask for more?
TIA!!

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
I would never take the salary unless it was what I had wanted within 2,000. The job I have now I was told the salary wasn't negotiable. Guess what I negotiated it. If a co. wants you they are not going to forget about you because you will cost them 5,000 more a year.

in terms of negotiating...i am not sure I can help you there.
BUT, if it is a job that you REALLY want then i would consider it. I would also ask about how long before you would get a raise/bonus.

I say negotiate!
Tell them you were hoping for more around $$$. If they still don't budge, you can ask them what their review policy is? They may offer to review in 3 months and bump you up then.

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
I wouldn't start negotiating until they've made you the offer and no matter what, it's always negotiable.
If you try and the salary atill isn't exactly what you want but you REALLY want the job, negotiate vacation, signing bonus, 401k contributions, etc.

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
I have heard that you are always supposed to negotiate your salary. Although I have yet to do it!

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
Always negotiate. Women primarily fall into the trap of accepting the status quo salary wise.
We don't want to rock the boat. That's actually factual in most cases..there have been studies done.
To answer your question, I would say that you were hoping a salary of $xx was offered because that is what you feel the position is worth with your background and experience.
If they won't budge ask them for bonuses/vacation time/other perks in lieu. Also ask them for a review in 3-6 months with a bump in salary.
This is very normal and I bet they are even expecting it.
If you don't ask, you don't get. They won't pull the offer from you because you speak up for yourself.
Most of the time employers will want to make a new employee happy, and if it means a few thousand more-they do it. I have negotiated every single job of mine. I have always gotten more money..maybe not the money I originally asked for everytime but more than originally offered.

What is the best way to get more money during the yearly review? When people doing the same job for 8 more years and 20 years older are making like 15-20K more money. SO ANNOYING.

At one job the salary really was not negotiable, but I got summer hours, which my department is not supposed to be entitled to. So I got something in return for a lower salary. I also never accept or reject right away. I always tell them that I will have to work the numbers & get back to them the next day or so.

People always say that but for me...money is ONE of the most important things about a job. I have worked jobs where i feel I am not paud what I am worth and it makes me resentful. Which ends up making me find a newjob where i say to myself I am not settling for anything less than X.

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
I'm very torn on this subject. I ended up taking a job that was a HUGE increase for me, but was 5-10 thousand less than what I "aimed" for --- and I DID try to negotiate and the only thing I got out of it was that at the time of review, I'd be considered again.
I ended up taking the job because of other perks as well (tuition is paid, bonus, proximity to home) and I've been happy.
However, I know that in the next year if I do not get a salary increase, I'll end up leaving. So, it's a double edged sword. You should always ask for more if you want/need it --- but then if they come back and say no, you have to make the tough decision.

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
Always negotiate. You have nothing to loose. The worst they can say is that is the best they can do and at the end of the day you accept at the original offer. At least you know you tried. I would never accept an offer without negotiating.

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
I think the best way to ask for more money in your yearly review is to be prepared with the following:
1. what do other people ina similar industry/job as your make? 2. what have you done this past year to add value to your company? 3. list any additional responsibilities or special projects you have taken on
the worse thing to do is to walk in and ask for a raise just because you've been there for XX years and you're a hard worker. If you are doing the same thing all year and you can't show an increase in your work product or responsibilities, then you are not really giving your employer a reason to give you a raise.

Re: Negotiating salary questions...
It depends. I just started a new job today actually , and I took a paycut. I was working in manhattan and now I'm on Long Island and I drive there under a half hour. it was so worth it to me, I did not try to negotiate . If I could take or leave the position , I would negotiate.
