Neighbor Issues...

We own a condo, but we have a unit above ours. Last week someone new moved in. He blasts the music starting at 6AM (I hear the shower running at the same time, so I think he plays it from his bedroom so he hears it while in the shower). I want to say something, but am not sure how to go about it. DH and I did not introduce ourselves yet, and I don't know if I want our first meeting to be a complaint. Do you think it would be better to leave a note, kindly asking to keep the music down since ceilings/walls are thin? Or better to talk to him in person?

Re: Neighbor Issues...

in person, I might try to give a little honey with the vinegar...knock on his door with a plate of cookies, and introduce yourself, and then mention that you hear his music every morning....

We do have a Board, and you can send them written complaints, but I was thinking I might rather leave that as a last resort since it might create more bad blood than going to him first.

Re: Neighbor Issues...

I would go to them first. We have a new neighbor and she recently left a note about something for our other neighbors, who are decent people and pretty friendly. The note was NOT well received at all.

Sometimes too, people don't realize how much the noise carries until someone says something. I would talk to him.

Re: Neighbor Issues...

I'd talk to him first, before you make a complaint, even if the cookie thing is cheesy, it's still "welcoming"....he just might not realize that you can hear it....
I moved about a month ago...and the guy upstairs from me, who was always smiling to my face complained after the first week I was there to the management company about my dog barking when I left for work in the morning...and it hurt my feelings sooo much that he didn't just knock on my door and tell me....
I mean, Gus is only a year old, and it was a new place, so he had to adjust, and he did, which is what I told the manager when she told me that this guy complained..but I would have moved the crate to another area of the apartment or something to try to accomodate this guy.
It just made me feel so unwelcomed...like I did something wrong.

And if you want to be evil and load them with Ex-lax, he'll just be putty.

Good luck! Neighbor problems are no fun.

Re: Neighbor Issues...

I would definately say something and I would say it in person. it is also possible that he has his speakers on the floor, which would make the music sound louder to you than if they weren't on the floor. So, that is an issue you may want to address.

I agree.

My best friend has an apt in manhattan and the lady below her ahs never introduced herself but left her a few notes about noise when she first moved in (my friend isn't noisy, this woman is nuts), but honestly, because it was a note w/o a meeting, my friend just felt t was ridiculous and harrassing. I think if you make nice first, the complaint will be taken better.
