Neighborhood kids... W T F!
So yesterday I had a bout 35-40 people here. My SIL and BIL and their 4 kids are here staying with us. My MIL and FIL are here. And all my family was here. I invited my neighbor over for the bbq. Next thing I know there is this kid here who lives down the block. I have never met his family before. Hes playing volley ball in our backyard. Then its time for us to eat dinner. He grabs a hot dog and Hamburger. Hanging out in my kitchen. I said do your parents know your here did they say you could come back here and hes like yup they know.
THEN we are doing sparklers in the front yard. Kids like "oh can I have one" so my DH said no. I don't know if your parents want you to have one. Then he goes to my BIL and askes him and hes like no. I don't know your parents. He says they wont care. UMMM NO.
We had birthday cake for my FIL and he says "I want to blow out the candles" Then I was cutting the cake and hes like "i'll take a piece" I flat out said No. I don't know if your parents want you to have it. How do I know if he's alergic? This kid was here for a good 6 hours with no parents in sight!
HOW do you do that. I've never met the parents before never even seen them! We are pretty new to the neighborhood. How does his parents know we arent drug addicts or worse (I know extreme but still)
Thoughts?

I think he doesn't have it so good at home- I wouldn't be mad- I would feel sad for him
he was gone all day and his parents didn't care- he probably had the time of his life- I see it from your point of veiw that you didn't know if he was allergic to things- but I feel bad for the kid

Re: Neighberhood kids... W T F!
Oh wow I think I would have asked him his phone #, then called his mom and told her "Oh your son is here, did you know that? Well since we never met and I don't really know him, why not come by and we can meet you>I am sure you would want to know where he is, right??" Maybe that would have shamed her into taking some responsibility for the poor kid. Maybe he has a crappy home life and was happy at your house -- you did a good thing letting him stay...and not letting him do stuff you don't know if he should.

I would have escorted him right back to his house and knocked on his door to tell his parents what azzes they are! Seriously, W T F is wrong with *some* people?! I feel sorry for the kid.

Re: Neighborhood kids... W T F!
I agree with the poor kid, bad parent scenario, but I think of how my nephew & niece invite kids over all of the time. When I was 7, I invited a friend over my house. He took my bus home & came over. My mom found us jumping on my bed & called his mom who was frantic. Did your nephew & niece invite him?

NO all of them came over to ask who this kid was and how annoying he was.

Sounds like our "boy on a bike"
We have this boy in our neighborhood, he's about 12 and no one knows his real name. He's just boy on a bike. He stops at everyone's home if he sees you outside and talks to you. If you have a dog he'll come over and play with your dog.
Well yesterday I went to a BBQ around the corner. Their were many kids there and so was "boy on a bike" Everyone kept asking where is this kids parents and do they even know he's at this party.
The boy on a bike had been out of his house from 1pm till about 10pm and his parents did not even care.
Well today I was walking the dog and passed Boy on a bike's house. My heart really sank and all the times I had gotten annoyed at boy on a bike because he gets my dog all hyper and thinks it funny I honestly felt guilty. He doesnt have a father. He lives with his mother and grandmother. The mother acts like he's an inconvenience and I could hear her yelling at him from down the block. And it wasnt like he was doing anything wrong - he was trying to help her and she was just screaming at him. Then when I got to the house I wanted to cry - it looks like it's a mess. I could only imagine what the inside looked like if that is how the front looked like. And they dont even have curtains on the windows. She has a blanket covering the front window and the back sliding door has what looks like aluminum foil on the doors. He was all excited to see me and my dog and he turned to his mom and said mom look it's simba. he's a golden retriever. And the mother said "I dont really care" and walked away.
This boy that you are talking about may really have it bad at home. He may seem like a pain but it may be the only sanity he has.

I actually had a very similar situation with two boys in the neighborhood. Their home environment left a lot to be desired and they really had nothing. They really liked to come over and help DH with things around the house. They didn't have a father figure as he was incarcerated. Unfortunately, things took a turn in the wrong direction and we really had to limit the time spent with them. Had what they wanted remained some attention and positive reinforcement, I would have been fine iwth that.
