nervous-going to dinner party at someone's home and i'm vegetarian UPDATED
So we have a fancyschmancy party tomorrow at a posh apt in the city, thrown by a friend of a friend in honor of same friend. I eat no meat or poultry. I didn't tell them anything because im afraid to sound pushy and or bratty. Please let them have something (salad!!!) I can eat otherwise it will be so uncomfortable. Anyone have a similar experience?
Update-thx to all for the reassurances. First, it was not a sit down dinner, nor your typical buffet either. It was really weird actually. Here's how it went: walk in , greet hostess tell her we brought a bottle of wine. She looked puzzled. Ok no prob moving on, two butlers offer us drinks. They pass two appetizers: pigs in blankets and deviled eggs . The party was in the living room. Plates of food were out: sliced ham, sliced roast beef, rolls, shrimp, dried apricots, brie, grapes and pasta salad. Then they had a cake, no coffee. My mother would've been I had pasta salad and dried apricots. Dh had the meats, said they were just ok.
All in all a nice evening with friends but i was surprised at the food menu/setup. Guess this is how the other half lives

Re: nervous-going to dinner party at someone's home and i'm vegetarian
I've had the experience from the other side of the fence. In all likelihood they will have accounted for a vegetarian option (there are a lot more of you folks out there!) - so I wouldn't worry.
I can say that - as a host - I have encountered this situation before and have felt just awful. I wound up back in the kitchen throwing together a pasta dish for a vegetarian guest because I didn't know her preferences before and did not account for them. It's NOT bratty to let your host know that you have certain dietary restrictions, so please don't feel bad next time!

Re: nervous-going to dinner party at someone's home and i'm vegetarian
I'm a vegetarian and even if there is not a vegetarian main dish, there is always something I can eat. There is usually one option for an appetizer (like cheese, or chips and dip, or fruit platter) and then with dinner, there are usually rolls or bread, salad or some sort of vegetable, maybe potatoes of some sort... it's usually an odd meal, but there is something for me to eat without looking like i am not eating anything and without starving myself. You might want to go out to eat after the party or you might be surprised and there will be so much food you can eat.

ITA. I would feel terrible if I didn't know as the host. Maybe make a quick mention. BUT, I am sure there will be some sort of veggie/starch/salad dish on the table.

Thanks, hoping i'll be pleasantly surprised and its not awkward with everyone having a sit down meal with full plates and me with a roll of bread on my plate

Re: nervous-going to dinner party at someone's home and i'm vegetarian
i'm a vegetarian...i actually try to eat mostly vegan, but i know THAT would be a lot to expect when dining out or in someone else's home. i find there is always something to eat that's vegetarian, even if it's just a salad. sometimes i'll eat something light beforehand so that i'm not famished in case the only thing i can eat really is just salad.
good luck and enjoy your party!

Re: nervous-going to dinner party at someone's home and i'm vegetarian
I usually menton it to people way in advance. I woldn't mention it last minute. I would eat a little something beforehand. I'm SURE there will be a salad of some sort or vegetable side dishes.
I was at a dinner the other night at church and I ate a huge plate of salad. Everyone said they couldn't believe how good I was being in terms of my eating, but really it was because the rest of it was meat, and I wasn't 100% sure the vodka sauce didn't have meat

If I was going to someones house for dinner, I'd bring either a bottle of wine or a dessert. Maybe you can make something that you'd eat?

That is so bizarre! I guess it's been a while since I've been to a fancy schmancy party but that is not what I would have expected
