Netflix's Price Increase starting 9/1/2011

Anyone get the email from Netflix about price increases? What do you guys think about it? I wandered over to their site and the amount of angry comments was so overwhelming!!

I feel bad for Netflix because they are the best right now and the cheapest and are being foced to increase their price because of the content providers. Netflix will experience 0 increased revenues - every cent will be passed on to the content providers.

Who, more likely than not, will push Netflix out of existence in the next 5 years by turning instead to cable companies with vastly deeper pockets.

Netflix is far unhappier about this than the users. I don't mind paying the new $ 15.99 fee, its still a lot less than what we were paying when renting from Blockbuster!

Well, since I don't stream anything, I will just switch to the DVD only plan and end up saving money!

Even if I did use both, I wouldn't be that upset. The new fee is probably what 2 movies tickets would cost, and for unlimited viewing for a month, I think it is still a pretty good deal and better than a premium cable channel, IMO.

I got it and after thinking about it, decided we are still way ahead paying the $16.

I am on the fence. It's still not really expensive, but they raised the rates in the beginning of the year and again now. I downgraded my plan in January to reduce the cost and now there's a 60% increase for the 1 dvd plan plus streaming plan. I was paying $15 for the 2 dvd plan and now I'll be charged $16 for the 1 dvd plan.

If they had more current/new shows & movies available for streaming I wouldn't mind as much but for an extra $6 a month I am not getting anything more - just more of the same.

I'm really pizzed. I don't want to pay $60/year more. I may drop my plan down but I need to keep at least 1 dvd as an option because it's the only place I can find all of the independent films no one has heard of & the documentaries no one carries.

If a RebBox-like thing popped up with those options, I'd get rid of it.

Same here, we rarely stream, so we'll probably just drop that and also save money in the process.

We started to ignore our DVD's in lieu of streaming, but we don't want to give them up entirely. So now we are just determined to request more DVD's than before. I am annoyed about the increase (Especially since they did it without letting us know what we might be gaining from it) I wish they said we will be bringing more movies and shows to streaming or something.... but it seemed like an increase without any reward. It is still worth it for us so we will be doing both plans that got split but despite staying with them, it irritated me a little. This is on top of them making the website less efficient. They keep changing the website structure, they have lost my ratings, and make it more frustrating to browse in my opinion.

I think its those big red kiosks you see outside grocery stores and 7-11s on the Island..You basically walk to them, pick a DVD, slide in your credit card and out pops a DVD. If you don't return it within a certain time frame, they charge your card late fees..

I've never actually used Red Box and don't find their selection that impressive. I am too lazy to actually walk to them and pay for it..I would rather sit on my couch and watch streaming Netflix any time I want.Chat Icon

I wouldn't feel too bad for them. Their stock price is through the roof, their stockholders are doing fine.

We are cancelling. We just don't watch enough to justify spending 16/month, it can be spent better elsewhere. We are going back to redbox/library.

Red Box has new releases before Netflix's streaming option.

I rarely have a desire to watch movies from 18+ month ago.

With Red Box I can grab movie in the city and return it at home or at any other location I pass. I've even returned movies while away on business.

It wouldn't be bad if Netflix had more titles available for streaming...but the pickings are slim.
We'll probably do the DVD only and skip the streaming although it sucks, cause part of the reason we chose the Blu-ray player we did was because we could stream netflix through it.

We canceled it after only having Netflix for one month.

For us, the titles just weren't there that we were interested in to make it worth it.

Between RedBox, Time Warner Movies on Demand and buying the occasional DVD here and there, we are more than covered.

Yup, we cancelled getting movies in the mail. We use the streaming 99% of the time anyway. I think the increase is rediculous.

Hubby and I are EXTREME-streamers. We rarely watch live tv anymore. With all the TV shoes available on Netflix, and Hulu Plus we could probably forgo cable all together.

we're going to cancel it..we don't watch THAT many movies or shows a month to make it worth it...we'll just redbox it like we have done in the past too (its only $1 & no commitment) and continue to DVR stuff

It's the principle of it, not so much the amount that gets me.

If their streaming offering was better I'd be happier.

However, I don't see me getting rid of it anytime soon.

I've decided to keep the streaming and drop the DVD's. My library has a really great selection of new movies for free.

Have you checked your library system? I usually can find the indies & foreign films I want somewhere in the Nassau system and get it through inter-library loan. Sometimes I have to wait a while - I've been waiting on Potiche for months - but at least it's free.

"We would like those members to stay with Netflix, but the reality is people will leave. We'll make it up over time and the service will continue to grow. I don't want to sugarcoat this. We do expect a certain amount of people to leave the service," Swasey said. Besides, "Netflix members already go to Redbox, order cable, go to theater and Amazon."
