New Car Seat Law

Some of you may already have seen this but effective yesterday, November 24th, New York State has raised the age that children must be in a car seat to 8 years old.

Some are calling it a Booster Seat Law, but that is not totally correct. The law states that children under the age of 8 must be in a federally approved child safety seat. This can be a traditional 5-point harness or the booster seat.

The reason I do not call it a booster seat law is because many parents are changing their children to a booster sooner than they should.

Many of the seats on the market today can go above the old 40 pound limits. The longer you can keep a child in the 5-point harness, the safer they are.

Nassau County Traffic Safety will be keeping their fitting station open for the winter. Currently appointments are made for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 12:30 and 2:30.

We are exploring expanding to one Saturday a month but need to know if there is a need to do so. I need forum mail or comments here to justify the opening of a weekend day.

Call 516-571-1893. The phones and voicemail are fixed and working.

Re: New Car Seat Law

There is no law with regard to changing from one seat to another.

With regard to changing from one seat to another depends on your child and the seat you have.

For safety purposes children should remain in a 5-point harness as long as possible. Normally children under four should not be in a booster.

When choosing a convertable seat, one that goes to a higher weight forward facing is best. Try to buy a seat that goes to at least 50 pounds forward facing.

Be careful though. Many people buy seats thinking they are buying a seat that goes to 100 pounds only to find out that they only go to 40 pounds using the harness; 100 using it as a booster.

We have the Britax Decathlon. We are set for a while but he is already 32 Lbs and 36.5 inches at 2.5 years old. I will keep him in it as long as possible.

Re: New Car Seat Law

While I agree that car seats are important, 8 yrs old....seriously?

My nephew is 8 years old, 5 ft tall and weighs around 80 lbs and he should be in a car seat? He is as big as a petite woman.

Since he is over 4'9" we don't have a problem. You would not get the ticket if over this height.

But we are concered with age development, not size.

HAHAA we can help you with that too!!!
OK what you want to do is make an account for yourself, just so you can log in and log out. If you don't want to be "found" as Chris {Last name} by anyone, just put in the bare basic info and set your profile to "private".
Then you can create a GROUP, where you can hosts discussions, upload photos, and just keep a running dialog about all things "carseat" related.
For something this important you want to make yourself the administrator of the site, and not give editing rights to others, that's all covered in the administrative section of the group.

Then all of *US* can join your group, and tell our friends to join too!!!

Height is an important factor people don't seem to consider either. Just because a seat goes up to 50 or 65 lbs for a harness doesn't mean it will get you too far if your child has a long torso.

If you have an older child, let them help pick out the seat, because how it fits your child in your car is important.
