New Home...totally clueless about yard....
Everywhere I go there are bags of fertilizer...shurbs...fowers... This is our first home and I am clueless about what to do but know i should be doing something! I need yard and law maintenance for dummies.
Does anyone have a bulleted list of what comes first?

New Home...totally clueless about yard....
I waited the first year. I watched what rebloomed and what I liked/disliked. Then the following year, we took action.

Re: New Home...totally clueless about yard....
We just bought fertilizer last weekend. We have to wait to April 1 (Cty law) to put it down, so once this snow disappears, DH plans to spread it across the lawn. We use Scotts.
If you put down fertilizer, you have to wait 6 weeks before you put down grass seed otherwise you'll be wasting your $$ on the fertilizer.
The fertilizer we purchased has stuff in it to kill weeds (crab grass, dandelions, etc).
They sell grass seed in sunny, sun & shade, dense shade mixes. You have to figure out where in your yard it's best to use these based on where the sun hits. We have a very sunny side yard, but the backyard is shaded by trees and the front of the house does not get direct sun, so we use different strengths of seed in these areas and have seen success.
We have just under 1/3 acre and we can use the 5,000 sq ft bags for the yards or smaller.
You will want to purchase a spreader to put the seed/fertilizer down. Saves you time!
If you don't have IGS, make sure your hose is long enough to be able to water the stuff into the soil, as you will have to move it around your yard enough to ensure the seed is saturated by the soil (and not eaten by the birds)
If you go to Lowes/HD on a non-weekend, the staff in the garden sections are helpful and can help you figure out what you need to get started. We did that with Lowes when we first bought our house and they laid the ground work and year by year, we have learned through our own experiences what has and hasn't worked.
ETA: or you can skip all the above and hire a landscaper who can handle all of this for you. If you check with neighbors, they may be able to offer recommendations for companies and then they would be familiar with your yard and what is needed.

No list but if your pets go out, you have to careful of what goes down. I don't even use fertilizer and although I have alot of weeds, I just hate the thought of putting anything into the ground where my dogs play or my child plays.

In nice weather DH and I go for walks in our neighborhood and scoped out the neighbors front yards for ideas
