New infant carrier/seat for new baby?

I have a Graco Snugride from when DD was a baby...loved it.

I am a self-confessed PARANOID person re: car safety. I want to buy a new infant seat b/c the kids will be 3 years apart, so that seat will be AT LEAST 3 years old (obviously it was manufactured at some point before I bought it) by the time the new baby uses it.

What would you do (or have you done)? Replace it, or reuse it? It's never been in an accident, stored properly at my house the whole time.

Granted, if this baby is a boy, I'll have to get a new one anyway since this one is pink Chat Icon

Does the seat have an expiration date on it? I can't remember if only convertibles have expirations dates on them.

I'll check out the expiration dates, thanks!

I'm definitely leaning towards getting a new one, esp. since they're not too expensive, just wanted to see what others have done!

The Snugride 22's structural design hasn't changed in 3 years. They are generally good for 6 years. The date of manufacture should be printed on the seat, and there should also be one on each of the bases you have.

If you know the seat was never involved in an accident and stored properly, there is really no need to replace it.

I was going to just re-use DS's (he was inly in it for 5 months and we had no accidents at that time) but will def be checking the expiration date now to make sure.

I got a new one. I looked at it in this way...I use it a lot, the straps on the old snugride were a bit twisty and dirty and since it is a safety item that gets lots of use why not get a new one.

I would not get a new one if it didn't expire (which I'm sure it didn't)

Some babies are out of the infant seat so early (Jack @ two months) that I don't think it's necessary especially if it's still in good condition and you've never been in an accident with it.

I don't plan on replacing mine. DS was in it a max of 4 months.

Re: New infant carrier/seat for new baby?

We reused DS's infant carrier for DD. They are 3 years apart, and the carrier is used for less than a year, so when we finished using it with DD, the seat was about 4 years old. Still well within the expiration date.

I never knew a car seat could expire.

We reused our Peg Perego car seat/infant carrier for DS #2 which is probably at least 3 yrs. old since I got it for my shower a few months before he was born.

The plastic degrades and is less effective in an accident. It's usually around 6 years.
