new kitten does not get along with dog!
We just got a kitten and he freaked out when I brought my dog over (I share her with my parents). I love my dog too much to end my relationship with her, and I would sooner bring the cat back b/c I am not yet attached to him. Will the cat adjust to the dog, or is it a bad idea to try to get them to get along? Any experiences?

They'll adjust, you have to give it time, there will probably be a lot of hissing and spitting, maybe some fur will fly and don't be surprised if the kitten hides, but they will get used to each other. Older dogs (not puppies) are much more excepting of a kitten coming into the house than the other way round than bringing a puppy into a house with an older cat. Time is the answer, let them sniff each other and get aquainted anf figure out where they both "fit" into the family. Good luck

Re: new kitten does not get along with dog!
You have to give it time. Easily a little baby kitten seeinga a dog for hte first time, all afraid. That is a NORMAL response for a scared baby cat.
In general, animals do not easily get along. I had two cats that did not get along for the longest time but learned to avoid each other and tolerate one another.
But if you can easily part with the kitten, it would be very sad if you decide to get rid of it later in the game when it becomes attached to you. That would not be good. I would say what will wind up happening is the dog will learn to stay away and the cat will run and hide when the dog comes over, if it ever gets to that point.
Do some research online about how to break the animals to each other. Not just take the kitten home and put her on the floor with a "strange"animals/dog. There are many ways to help them adjust and to introduce them to each other, that you can find online, just google it.
Cats react that way when scared so the goal is to break the cat in the right way so she is NOT so scared.

Re: new kitten does not get along with dog!
they'll adjust! I have 2 cats and a dog. My 1 cat doesn't mind our dog at all and they get along quite well. My other cat isn't a fan of our dog... he's afraid of him. But they'll have to get over it or just leave one another alone.
Time will help and it could take some time...

I agree 100%, plus the dog won't be around all the time so it's not going to be that difficult to get them used to each other. Good luck!!

Re: new kitten does not get along with dog!
Since I am super impulsive, I gave the cat to my in laws, but then I felt really bad and decided I wanted the cat back, so i am picking him up tomorrow. I know, I am such a wack-o, but I know I will miss him if I don't get hime back. Luckily they don't mind !

Do your inlaws actually want the cat? Iff they really want a cat, great. But if not, if they will just take it only to get rid of it in a few months too, that is not good. Just like it is not good for people to give pets as gifts to people who may not have really wanted them.
It would be very sad for the kitten if he/she is repeatedly sent from home to home. I have such a soft spot for animals and how they deserve love and consistency. I really hope you give it time to let the cat and dog get along, but I also hope if you change your mind again, that your inlaws truly want the cat and will treat her nice.
