New Mattress Smell?
IF your mattress had a "new" smell to it, how long did it take to go away?

New Mattress Smell?
This is really strong, as in the whole room stinks. It's so bad I have the window open to try to air it out. I had to wash my sheets today because the smell permeated into them. I felt like my lungs hurt from breathing in the chemical smell all night. I'm hoping it's not a year! LOL. I don't have any febreeze, but maybe I'll sprinkle some baking soda on it!

New Mattress Smell?
We left the windows open all day w/ the ceiling fan on. Smell was gone by the next day.

It's fore retardant on the mattress. I've heard it's gotten considerably worse lately. You can make a vinegar and baking soda mixture, ruin all over the mattress and vacuum everything up when dry. Vinegar helps to remove the chemicals.

Re: New Mattress Smell?
You really should let it air out before you sleep on it. While my new mattress is inner spring it also has foam padding on top. The odor was still quite strong. I didn't put any sheets on the bed I left the windows open for a few minutes at a time, closed the door and kept doing this for two days. For 48 hours straight, I did not sleep on the bed nor did I come into the room often. I slept in my guest room upstairs or on the couch. I would have aired it out longer if I could have.
I would not spray Febreeze on it. You'd just be spraying more chemicals into the bed.. Just my opinion though...
I copied this from my extensive research when I was mattress shopping:
The reason for the "New Smell" is that the memory foam is volatile organic compounds. VOC's encompass around 60 gasses that various compounds (often petroleum related) release over time as they break down. Though many of the worst offenders have been banned for use, mattress companies are not required to disclose ingredients so it can be hard to tell what is or is not in a memory foam mattress.
Certi-Pur is an independent organization that tests polyurethane foams and only certifies those that have been found to have low VOC levels, and do not contain chemicals of a concern like PBDEs and formaldehyde. If odors and chemicals are a concern for you, consider checking this certification when shopping.

New Mattress Smell?
My mattress is not memory foam (wouldn't buy one of those, don't find them comfy). But I'm happy to say the smell subsided after airing it out for 2 days and not sleeping in there.
